    Hi,
New computer with a test version of XP Pro. Lots of hassle with it so I purchased XP home and now want to install it. The CD won't overide XP Pro. Do I have to get rid of this test version and how please? Ideally I would like my scanner and camera to work with XP home. I tried downloading drivers but this hasn't worked. Printer which is supposedly compatible, has given up!
    Help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Yvonne

    Hi Yvonne
That's a new one on me - trial version?? Presumably time limited - the only trial version of XP that I am aware of was made available by MS when XP was first announced - cost £10 in UK and lasted 180 days, if I remember correctly. Still have it somewhere.

Anyway, as you have discovered, it is not possible to load Home over Pro as this is a 'Downgrade' rather than an 'Upgrade'.

I think your only option is a clean install of XP Home which will involve a format of the hard drive and will wipe everything on it.

You will need to backup all your data to CD/DVD before you do anything.

You will need the installation CD's for all the software currently installed on your PC- do you have these?

Go into the BIOS and check that the Boot order is set to CD-ROM/Floppy/HDD

Insert the Home CD into your CD-ROM drive and reboot. PC should boot from the Home CD. Follow the instructions on the screen. There is an illustrated screen by screen tutorial here - read through it before you do anything.

Post back with further questions if you are not sure of anything.

If you could be more specific about what you don't like about Pro, or how it is giving you trouble, we may be able to help you solve the problems. I fail to see why anything would work differently on Home than it does Pro, especially if you are only concerned with hardware compatibility. I'm afraid you'll do a lot of work to downgrade, and still have the same troubles. What exactly is Pro doing to frustrate you so much?

(Typo - home = Pro?). This worries me - would you like to expand on this? I hope you are not confusing the need to purchase a licence with Product Activation.

I'll put this as delicately as I can - is the copy of XP Pro supplied with your new PC legal?

As Johanna posted installing Home will not resolve the problems with Pro - they are one and the same given some detail changes re. security and a few advanced features in Pro. But as you now have Home - clearly opened let's get down to the task in hand and get Home installed.

I posted details on the installation and have read your previous post re. the scanner and camera.

You have an answer re. the scanner.

As far as the camera and printer are concerned post details and I will investigate compatability, drivers, etc for you.

Oops sorry Pete and Johanna for confusing you. I did mean Pro installed, but what I wanted was XP Home. My scanner is not compatable Colorado 9600 Primax. Printer is now working. Little camera wont download. The camera is just a cheap Jenoptik Presto Mr. Photo using a Twain driver. I had been using windows 98 and the scanner is linked through the printer not USB. Printer Epson stylus 760. I had been using MGI photosuite to open images and saving to jpeg.

If I reformat and install Home as planned, I don't suppose I will be any better off? Perhaps I will need a new scanner. I would like to keep my printer though!
    Thanks
    Yvonne

Very unlikely, but you say you don't have a licence for your copy of Pro which suggests it is a copy which does not require activation - and may well not be capable of updating - I'm still puzzled on this - but that is your business.

Re. the scanner - connect it directly to the parallel port and try the driver solution given in your other post on this. If it still refuses to work I think a replacement is called for as there seem to be compatability problems.

Re. the printer - seems to be USB/Parallel - I would run it USB as it will print much faster.

Re. the camera - can you post the model no. please

You say the scanner isn't compatible. By this, do you mean that it's installed and gives you trouble or are you unable to get XP drivers for it? If the latter, try a Win2000 or WinNT driver. It may work for you. My scanner is 5 yrs old and there's no 2k or XP driver available. MS says the scanner won't work with XP. I downloaded an NT driver, installed, and the scanners been working like a charm ever since. Been about 9 months now. If you try this, set a restore point first, just in case.

    Hi Pete,
The scanner is not USB. I will take advice and try and download an NT driver.

    The camera Jenoptik TinyCam2.
    Thanks a lot.

That was quick Pete! Thanks for the links. Yes there is what I think a serial number at the base so I shall have a rummage around. Have gone back to the scanner thread as this is now working but limping!
    Cheers
