I get an error NTLDR is missing. I can repair using the Recovery Console. Unfortunately this is and eMachine and I didn't get the XP disks just the full recovery disks from eMachine with XP on them. My question is haw can I get the Recovery Console and get started again.

The computer I am on now is also and eMachine and it is OK.

Copy NTLDR from the working machine.

If it won't boot I can't see NTFS.

Prepare an NTFS boot disk containing ntldr on your working machine:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595#3

It's a good idea to keep an XP "Quickboot" disk handy, containing:

    ntldr
    ntdetect.com
    boot.ini

If I were you, and those recovery disks only allow for a format and reinstallation of XP, I'd make a disk image asap.

Well...I wasn't totally sure of your abilities, so I didn't want to just type a 15 line response, thinking maybe you could get a hint from my answer ;)
Abraxas has one way of doing it.
The other is to make a bootdisk that allows you to read/write NTFS partitions. Get it here: http://www.bootdisk.com/peanuts/readntfs.zip

Abraxas : Thanks! Took 5 minutes to make the boot disk and when I booted I checked the Norton protected recycle bin and there it was NTLDR. Restored and re-booted and viola. Thanks again!

roboot : Thanks! I guess the older I get the dumber! DUH! I didn't even think of a boot disk.

    Glad to help.

When I first got XP, I was a little scared of NTFS and went FAT32 because the idea of not being able to go into DOS and solve all my problems seemed too much.

But, have NTFS now and am not nearly so frightened! (But I did buy NTFS DOS, just in case).
