with a review of ntboot log, there are many 'can not load driver' -- numerous repeats of most. Eventually xp starts and appears to be OK.

the following is a partial list of the 'can not load driver' (the first on the list is the first that the log shows as not loaded).

Did not load driver Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
Did not load driver Video Codecs
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
Did not load driver Video Codecs
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
Did not load driver Video Codecs
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
Did not load driver Video Codecs
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices

I can not find any reference to this problem in my repair books.

If someone could give me a suggestion on how to approach and solve the problem I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

There's no problem there. It's just the way XP works. Here's my list of drivers not loaded:

    \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\processr.sys
    \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Sfloppy.SYS
    \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\i2omgmt.SYS
    \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Changer.SYS
    \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdaudio.SYS
    \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\p3.sys
    \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\amdk7.sys
    \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\intelppm.sys\SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\PCIDump.SYS
    \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\lbrtfdc.SYS

XP has to sort out from a default list just exactly what is suitable for your particular system. Pay no heed to the process, it'll only keep you awake needlessly. :)

    More Info

If your OS loads between 1 min. and 1 1/2 min. you're normal. If it takes much longer, try trimming some startup programs that you don't need in every session.

    Yikes!

    Do a virus/malware scan.
Then do an in-place Upgrade form of reinstallation.

We are not talking about a trivial driver in this case.
It could not load an ACPI compliant HAL.
