This machine I built years ago and seldom ever use. I have had it up for a few days and now out of nowhere after it boots up the screen and icons blink and reset. I thought it was a windows issue so I used the XP disc and did a repair. The repair went fine it booted back up and now the samething. Oddly enough you can open taskmanger and even play a video-I plugged up a new monitor-samething-I can't test the onboard video because it's only pci and I don't have any of those old cards-----WHAT IS IT--about to drive me bonkers.

Disable "Automatically Restart" with hopes of getting a Windows error screen that may reveal the error source. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > untag the box shown for "Automatically restart." OK out and wait for the crash. ;)

Another possible option, check the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) for any errors reported.

Thanks for the quick response, Now I get nothing at all. I going to reset the memory sticks and reset the CPU as well-let you know if that changes anything.

Again, thanks for the quick answer.

Auto restart is off-it still restarts the same--can type eventv in RUN because it resets to fast-devise manger checks all hardware fine-even in safe mode it resets just the same.

    any thoughts would help

Type eventvwr.msc in the Task manager > File > New Task (Run) field and see if you can get there that way.

While in Task manager, run the following command:

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
ps. Be sure to include the space before and after the /i

If still no joy, get ShellExView. It is a stand-alone context menu editor so you can run it from a flash drive, floppy, or other media. Run it from the Task Manager and use it to disable all non-Windows type context menu items. The effects are instant so rebooting isn't necessary. Non standard context menu items can cause the problem you have so we'll need to eliminate that as a possibility before going forward. If in doubt, disable ALL context menu items shown. You can restore them easily so not to worry. If you get a cure, you can restore them 1/2 at a time to bracket and corner the culprit.

If none of that works, post back for other things to try. You may yet have a hardware issue such as a card edge corrosion on the video card or memory. Remove and clean with a pencil eraser. Exercise all other data connectors while you're at it by unplugging them and replugging them a couple time to allow for a friction cleaning.
