I have many second hand pc's with pre installed windows XP pro. I wanted to get licenses direct from Microsoft but they tell me that they no longer make nor market the XP license.

My question is: Can I still legally use my pc's remebering that the software was pre installed?

I dont need upgrades as the system and projects I work on dont need anything newer......any advise welcome....

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

It would be my understanding that if XP was preinstalled on the computer is is licenced under the computer manufacturer's bulk licensing agreement.

    XP licenses

Thanks for your reply. I am almost sure that the PC's i bought second hand have been re-configured and installed with copy windows...how can I tell and what are the consequences.

I contacted Windows and they said that they no longer make or distribute XP licenses...where do I stand?

    See .....

    Windows Genuine Advantage
They are merely protecting their intellectual property - you do not own the software - you purchase a licence which gives you the right to use it on a single computer.

    My "take "...

If it comes from an original installation/image of the system, that might be an Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) installation of the system
Yes, but the operating system and software will be tied to the computer it came from, if it is OEM.

Test it at Microsoft (Genuine Advantage) if you want to make certain. Genuine Advantage might possibly be wrong...your choice.
