    G'day,
Just finished a search here, but can not find anything that relates closlely to the problem that I have sometimes.
Over the last week on 2 occasions running XP Pro when shutting down, windows will go through the procedure of the shutdown, but when it comes to the point of powering off it hangs and only a reset will get it moving again loading windows and on the second attempt it will shutdown.
The only thing that has changed in the setup is I have installed a USB2 PCI card and a Canon 8000F Scanner. The mobo a IWill KK266-R has no USB2.0 only USB1.1. Could this in any way be related and why is it only happening on the very odd ocation.
    Any Idea anyone
    thanks hawk22

The most common culprits causing a hang on shutdown are anti-virus programs and drivers.

Since you recently installed a scanner, that's the first thing I'd suspect. Does it have anything running full-time in the background, perhaps indicated by an icon in the system tray...or, in XP, now called the "Notification Area "? If so, try shutting down all scanner-related things before trying a shutdown. I've never quite understood why most scanners want something loading on startup since I can always start the software manually if I need it. Perhaps poke around in the scanner software to see if there is any option to disable its loading on startup.

    Well thank you,
Pete your first one was the one, "Turn off power management on a USB hub "
I did that and have had no more problems with hanging.
I had deliberately delayed my response to give it enough time to test, but no problems.
    thanks again
