About a week ago, prompted by all the discussions on XP's built in firewall, I enabled mine again, just to see what happened. I didn't notice any changes, and I use NIS 2003, so I forgot about it...until I tried to run Spybot. Spybot would update, (the tattletale globe told me that) and then would minimize immediately to the tray. I did the usual uninstall, reboot, reinstall...same behavior. So I downloaded the program fresh, reinstalled it- no change. I tried it on my second partition- still no joy. Then I remembered the XP firewall...hmmm...so I disabled it, rebooted and Spybot popped up as instructed, right away. After an install, the first run of Spybot detects and deletes Alexa, and I wonder if MS decided to disable Spybot through the firewall? Anybody else ever run into this? XP's firewall is back to disabled on my comp, now.

ps Spybot said "Congratulations, no threats found" :D

I have to hand it to you, Johanna ... you always start such interesting threads.

Hmmm ... I think you mean "minimize to the Taskbar ", Luna Lass. I can't find any setting that would provide a tray icon ... which makes sense, since Spybot doesn't run in the background.

I can't comment on the Windows firewall's interaction with Spybot ... I've never used it because it interferes with file sharing on my LAN.

Correct, Jim, minimizes to the taskbar. Blame the pain meds.

    Johanna,

Just read your post. I use XP's built-in firewall. I fired up my Spybot S&P, checked for updates, downloaded the 2004-02-02 update and when it finished I closed it. No problem

Just a note: I've never used any other firewall before.
