I'm about to upgrade from 98SE to XP Home Edition. My version of XP says Service Pack 1 is included (year 2002 version).
Is it recommended to do the Dynamic Update during installation?

P.S. I have a broadband connection but should I trust the update?

    Ace,

There is a large body of opinion on this board that Windows updates should be treated with caution - downloaded to hard drive from here and installed one at a time with a restore point plus a few days between each.

This may be a little extreme, but M$ have fouled up a few updates recently, so probably wise.

I guess with Dynamic Update you have no choice as to which you install. Windows Update, on the other hand, gives you the choice.

On balance I suggest it is better not to use the Dynamic Update facility on install. Use Windows Update after install or install manually - your choice.

Incidentally the updates coming out of M$ are mostly suffixed SP2 so you will need at least some of them.

You are confusing Dynamic Update with Automatic Updates.

Windows XP setup includes a new Dynamic Update. This enables the setup program to connect to the Microsoft Web site, to check for the latest updates before setup starts. This should guarantee that you have the most up-to-date files when you start the upgrade process.

This does not include all available Windows Update downloads, just setup fixes.
