On my home system I'm having trouble with the connection, and most of it is the phone company's problem. However, I think something isn't right with my XP dialer, but I haven't been able to isolate the problem.

When I dial my connection I will often get a bad line that just will not negotiate the connection. Even worse, sometimes it will appear to be connected but is not actually receiving data. When this happens, the only thing I can do is disconnect and try again. The problem is that very often the dialer will not actually disconnect - if I open the Task Manager it will show as Not Responding. If I End Task, the line will apparently disconnect, but after that I am unable to open the dialer and reconnect - nothing happens at all. If I right-click on the dialer icon, the drop-down menu will still say "Disconnect" at the top but it's greyed-out. The only way I can get the dialer to respond is usually to reboot and try again.

I run Norton regularly that comes up clean, and I also run Spybot and Adaware, and find nothing. Does this suggest anything to anyone?

Might be worth deleting your dialup connection and recreate a new one. Make sure you write down your username/password and other settings you may forget. Check with your ISP for specific DNS settings and proxy settings if applicable. Update the Modem drivers as well. The default XP drivers work for most Modems, but are quite old now.
