Each time I boot XP I get a blue screen telling me that there is some problem with the disk and I should allow a scan before I use the program. Can anyone advise me how I can permanently fix this annoyance.

If you post the exact, entire error message you are getting, we can figure out what is wrong and tell you how to fix it.

    Thanks Newt

I should have given the following info:
    The screen says:
"Checking file system on D: (This is my WinXP Drive)
The type of file systemis FAT 32.
One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume serial number is 3A13-14EE "
It then goes on to say:
"Windows is veryfying files and folders...
    N percent completed. "

    Fuzz..
Do you let the scan complete? If so, Windows should then reboot and declare the 'volume clean', and then continue loading. If this continues to happen after letting the scan complete, there may be other problems that windows can't correct. You may want to go to your HD manufacturers website and see if they offer a diagnostic program to check your disk's health. HTH

    Thanks MrB

After checking my disk health on the Seagate website I have discovered that there is a S.M.A.R.T error and the disk could fail at any time. Looks like I need a new hard drive.

    Thanks again for you advice.

    Is it a Compaq?

A friend of mine had this mesage on his new LapTop for a couple of weeks, telling him to backup his data and go get a new harddrive because a failure was imminent.

That message doesn´t show anymore ......

He had no blue screens, though. It was only a message during initiation of the startup.
