Does it really matter if you install a microsoft update for an application which is not on your PC?

    Thanks

I guess not, since if you have your Computer set to Automatic update it will download and install all the listed updates.
I always do Custom, select and read what the update is about then decide yes or no.

If the update is inapplicable to your setup it is most unlikely that it will install.

Thinking as to what may be at the back of your mind - the last set of Windows updates for Office 2003 SP3 included patches for Office 2003 SP2 and Works 5 - apparently these are needed for Office 2003, especially if 2003 was installed 'over' or as an upgrade.

I manage a computer running Windows XP SP2 and Office XP SP3 without Outlook 2002 (was included on the Office XP CD but not installed). I was prompted for KB905649 and KB921594, two updates for Outlook 2002 until I finally succumbed to the nagging and installed the updates. They did no good but also no harm.

I'm also in a similar position Windows XP Pro SP2 and Office XP Pro SP3 without Outlook 2002 (was included on the Office XP CD but not installed along with some other options such as Excel, I only use Word).
