I don't know if it's my internet connection that keeps dropping out from time to time or something else. I'm using a cable modem so I should be connected 99% of the time.

I keep getting this nagging prompt when I try to pull up a webpage telling me I'm not connected to the internet. And asks me if I want to try to reconnect or work offline. When I select "try to connect" it always connects but the prompt is really starting to get on my nerves.

Is there anyway to get Windows to automatically try to reconnect to the internet?

Do you get this message while using your pc or after it has sat idle for a period of time?

There is a power management feature in Device Manager->Network Adaptor that is set to be Enabled by default.

    Which browser?

    Hello,
    which browser do you use?
If it Internet Explorer, I would recreate my internet connection, if I was you.
To do that, start IE, then click on Tools, Internet options, Connections tab then click on the Setup buttons. Then check Connect to the Internet, Next, Setup my connection manually, Next, Connect using a broadband connection that is always on then Finish. It should do the trick, assuming you use this browser.
If it failed or if you use another browser (you should!!! EG Firefox), I suggest you to setup you network card with your ISP primary and secondary DNS IP addresses. As it is a bit tricky, let us know if it is fixed or not before explaining how to do that.

Usually if I don't surf every few seconds. Like if I have IE pulled up then do something else then click on something I get the prompt.

I'm using version 6. I've had this computer for a year and it seems like it only started doing this a couple of weeks ago.

I'll check out the settings you mentioned when I get home. Sounds about like the home networking problem I was having. Where a function will work but if some information is missing or different it will act flakely at times.

I was having issues trying to pull up other computers on my network which was hit or miss. Sometimes it would work but most of the time I'd get an error telling me I didn't have permission or something.

Even though I had named both computers (network didn't work at all until I named them) I did not have a name the workgroup. When I went into the networking options, I think XP gave it a name "MSHOME" and ever since the network seems to be working fine.

I miss the Windows 95 days where something either worked or it didn't. Less options to get ******* up. XP does have advantages over the original 95 version but nowhere near as bad as Windows ME. That version was horrible.

    jseabolt,

Who is your ISP (internet provider)? I had a similar problem with Comcast recently, while they confirmed there was "a problem" in my area, they couldn't tell me what it was or when it was going to be fixed. I had NO connection for about 48 hours and was getting a similar error message. My modem seemed to be functioning properly and I was there when 'pinged'. I just flat out couldn't connect.
My connection is still a little flaky, but it is improving. There were some major power outages from winter storms over the past week or so and I think the internet may just be a little slow in general. Contact your ISP and see if there are any problems in your area. Post back with any changes or new info.

    B

I have it with Charter. I've had their cable modem since 1997 and their service has always been flakey to say the least. Around 2000, they had a short in the system where everytime it rained, the cable modem would go out. It wouldn't effect the TV. It didn't even have to be raining hard. Just sprinkling! I could tell what it was doing outside just based on wheather I had internet service. This went on for several months until they finally admitted a problem in specific regions of the county. One day I called the home office in Nashville and when it rained three days later I still had internet service. So I don't know if I finally got somebody's attention or they finally find the short.

There is no DSL where I live so it's either this or dialup.

Such as shame that I heat my house with a 25 year old heatpump (no gas heat) and my electric bill each month is just $70 and my TV and internet is $90 and I don't even have HDTV, HBO, just their 90 channel analog package.

OH just now I caught the error message. I clicked on your post, typed a reply within 5 minutes and when I hit "Submit Reply" I get the prompt message.

    Disconnecting network

    Several things to check out.
Your internet connection seems to be dropping or restricted.
My first thought would be an onboard network card.
Try installing another network card- a PCI might be first choice.
On install check the device manager to check that that specific card is set up properly - no question marks or exclamation points.
    Your isp may have prefences.
Here the DSL isp recommends D-Link as their brand of least trouble, the cable recommends SMC. If you have Windows XP the card should set up by itself.
You may as well want to update your drivers for the cards or if already have a PCI network card installed.
If that does not solve it try having a router log you on and keep you logged on.
If you have one of the firewalls such as the Symantec firewall or security or whatever else stupid name the stupid thing is known by it may be that your computer is logged on but the firewall is stopping the flow of information and that the browser thinks you are not connected .
Whatever is your preference I would uninstall the foolish thing.
A networking utility such as network magic might your life easier .
It would set up your network and try to reconnect your connection and or your router if automatically if the connection is lost.

    http://networkmagic.com/

the free version is more than adequete.
Lastly it is not out the realm that you have a dose of spyware which is overwhelming your bandwidth . A spyware scan with adaware , spybot or whatever you prefer might rule that out.
Your isp may even give you a free network card ( with box and driver) if they are afraid of losing you to another isp even.

    hope this helps
