I had wireless 256k installed and I am running at speeds of 110k. I put a laptop on the same line and I am running speeds of >200k. On my home PC i'm running 98SE and on the laptop WinXP. Could this be the problem or does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks, sttonk

Very likely to be an OS thing. 98SE dates from a time when almost all home internet use was dial-up and not even very fast dial-up by today's 56Kb standards. XP came along when broadband was fairly common and is more likely to be optimized for it.

You will probably have to change some settings to speed your 98 PC up. It will require some tinkering since there don't seem to be "standard settings" that are best for all systems.

Here you can get a TCP/IP optimizer and analyzer.

And Slow Transfer Rates with ICS and High-Bandwidth Devices from Microsoft may offer some help.

More good stuff here including a download 98 reg tweak that will automatically correct a setting which is known to cause speed problems.
