wireless signal

I'm running cable modem into a Netgear wireless WGR614, with three desktops, and a Dell inspiration laptop, (& infrequently Dell Axim). The prime purpose of the wireless need is so Laptop and be used in family/dining room for lesson plans and school work. The issue is that the wireless signal is less then steady. According to the lap top signal strength varies from poor to excellent, within seconds and no movement on the part of the reciever (laptop) or the operator!
I have "raised" the router, to a point where it is closer to the room where the laptop is. But i still get changes in signal strenght

 

The most probable cause that comes to mind is interference - it could be from anything - an electric motor, wireless transmissions, your neighbours wireless etc.

Try changing the channel to see if it helps.

 

Variable signal strength is a typical problem with wireless. A colleague was installing wireless in a school class room. When the kids stood up, the laptops lost signal!

Generally distance is less important that what the signal is going through. Wireless signally will generally travel through windows well, wood fairly well, vegetation and people OK, brick wall OK, stone wall poorly, steel reinforced concrete wall almost not at all. So you may find you get better signal if you can move the router to a position where there is less wall to pass through.

If you cannot find a better position for the router, you next best thing it to look for a larger add on antenae. That will boost the power and may give you the extra umpf you need.
