am trying to give my sister in law access to my dsl. i have a dlink wireless di624m super mimo. my sis in law lives about 100 feet away from my wireless router and there are 3 walls between us. i took my wireless laptop over to her house and in her office i was not able to get a signal but when i walked out to the kitchen the signal was low but was able to download at 90kbps which aint to dang bad so i know the signal can get there. when i tried in her desktop with a 54mb pci card i am not able to get a signal. so my question is there an antenna or something that will boost the signal to her office that will work. any thought would be appreciated.

Move your wireless router. Higher & more towards your sister in law's house. Some high gains antennas are also available, but haven't used them & so can't comment on their worth.

cant really move my router for it is in the right place for the systems i need to work on. centrally located. ive read about those antennas but not sure which one will do the job. dont want anything to expensive or a pain in the butt to install.

if anyone has used these high gain antennas and think they will work in my situation please let me know. like i said i know it can be done cuz my laptop which is just a 54mb built in wireless in my latitude can get connected in the kitchen but not in her office which is just around a door so that last wall is blocking the signal.

You can use a AP as a repeater in her kitchen to pickup your wifi and send it across in her entire house.

Access Point. And, thats your best bet unless you have an old Direct TV parabolic dish and can spare about $10 for parts - then you can hook up the whole neighborhood (legal considerations notwithstanding).

you mean some thing like this - D-Link AirPlus Extreme 108G Wireless Access Point or like this - Linksys Wireless-G Range Extender

so this access point device just needs power and it will act as a repeater from my house to hers and then the pci wireless card will pick up the signal???

dont mean to sound unappreciative but for 110.00 for this access point one could almost pay for the dsl connection.

so one of these gain antennas wont do the trick ??? both those extenders are fairly costly and i like my sister in law but not sure i want to spend that much.

i would give her a kiss cuz shes a very hot woman but i think my brother would kick my ass big time.

so am stuck with one of those 2 devices i mentioned. any preferences between the dlink access point or the linksys extender ???

so where do antennas fit in ??? how can they be useful ??? or are they not the way to go ???

gghartman, if you look around you can find cheaper access points. I have not used these so called high gain antennas myself but since they are cheap, give them a try first.

i guess if im going to do this id rather go with some thing that will definitely work and from what you all have said the ap or extender is the way to go.

which one is the better way to go the access point or the extender ???

i do a lot of in home wireless that so far has not needed anything more than the wireless router and the cards for the machines but i might have a client that needs more and this education will give me some thing to go on.
