Hey, I've had a few problems in the past which you guys have been gratefully able to help me with, which I much appreciate ^_^ So I figured I'd post this here and see if I could find a solution to this problem.

My friend recently posted on another forum I visit about his router problems. He hasn't been able to get online so I couldn't really get system specs, but, I figured I'd post this here anyway and see if by an off chance anyone had any suggestions. I'll just paste his post and his reply he posted afterwards. Hopefully that will suffice. If not, I'll try to get more info if I can.

He mentions that he thinks the router is fried. But, I figured I'd post this here anyway in case maybe that wasn't the problem or if there's a way to salvage it.

Thanks again for all your help in the past and in the future ^_^

    Post:

Oy, I'm on my mom's computer real quick posting this problem. We are having troubles with it, so I was just wanting to ask and maybe someone here would know.

I've checked the linksys site, and can't find the answers to the problems, and we've called some support ****, but no go.

My parents have a computer in the living room, they have cable broadband hooked up in here. We got a wireless (linksys) router, that is supposed to send a connection from their comp, to the comp in my room so that we have bb too. Yesterday my sister was online, and we had to go outside for a few (no one ******* with the comp when we were gone though) and we came back and it wouldn't let my sis do anything online, so she rebooted. It still wouldn't let us do anything (and hasn't let us connect at all since) and there are three icons that appear in my taskbar when the router is working and we have a connection: Local Internet connection, Local network cable and Wireless router connection. Yesterday it kept telling us the local network cable was unplugged (nothing was changed or unplugged though -_-) so we messed with it and we called this support thing and followed his directions, afterwards my Local internet connection dissapeared as did its icon. Now we just have local network cable unplugged, and the only thing still working and connected is the Wireless router connection. But we get no internet at all on our comp currently, and its not doing anything. I've ******* with the **** all afternoon yesterday, and earlier this morning. My mom is going to call the cable company tomorrow, but thats not goign to do much good because they won't send anyone out here to take a look at it, and anyways they tell us that you can't have more than one computer on the broadband (or are not supposed to) but we did share the connection that my prarents paid for on both comps since jan or feb.

So it doesn't really make much sense to me, and right now I have no internet. If this can't be fixed, the closest possible way I'd be back on regularly, would be if I get enough hours at work to pay for the isp myself for our comp because my parents can't. And as of now, I can't really use their comp, except right now to find a way to fix ours. Eh, just figured I'd post here too and see if there is anyone who has had this problem or would know how to fix it.

    Reply later:

Yeah, my stepdad unplugged all the stuff for the router out here (my mom stopped getting internet too for about 10-20 minutes, but they fixed that by just unplugging everything.) But he unplugged all that stuff for the router, tried resetting the modem, and we unplugged the one in my room and plugged it back in, still didn't fix. =/

We tried reinstalling broadband and the router on my comp, but that didn't work as well.

And yeah Jawa, we considered maybe it was the wireless router that was the problem (and we found out it most likely is..) but it'd cost like $100 and some to get the cable and length that we would need to get to our comp. Which my parents can't afford.

My mom was talking to a relative here, and they apparently had the same problem when they tried to use a wireless router like the one we use, and it just stopped working like ours. And they called in and followed a big walkthrough of stuff to do to reset the router, but when they followed it and got it to reset it still didn't fix. Their router just fried and was cheap (even though ours cost around $80-90), after a month. So they returned it and got a new one, and everything worked fine since then. So since our router is the same brand, got from the same store, and is having the same problem, we are pretty sure this one fried too. -_-

Sorry to hear of your friends misfortune .. many of us forget how easy solutions come when you have money in your pocket. Until they can afford a new router, suggest moving kids computer to same room as their parents. They can share the Internet connection using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).
Setting up Internet Connection Sharing. Includes instructions for w98SE through XP.
