    Hi ... You just want to do this here below

    The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
    to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
    Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

    NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
    devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

    NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
    EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
    hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
    After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

    1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device ".

    ===> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
    ===> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

    2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
    3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
    4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
    Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
    partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

    5. Clean Install Windows XP

    6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.
    ==> http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

    7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
    and download the available "Critical Updates ".

    8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
    of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
    available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
    and audio drivers.

    9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

    Note: If you are unable to activate Windows XP via the internet,
    then select the option to "activate by telephone ".

    When I could get into Safe Mode, I fixed it. The next time it locked up after the bootup screen, (the one with the squares running across), with a blue screen. I wrote down what it said, now I cannot find it. This time I used my MSDOS disc, and fixed it. Do not know what next, or why it is doing this. I am interested in the sfc /scannow now. Do not know how with the WinXP CD, and, or MSDOS disc. Just trying to cover all bases. Can get into BIOS, just not XP.
    QuickStart
    I have reinstalled XP a few times, but I want that as a last resort. I have Partition Magic partitions on this machine. I have Win98SE on the first partition, WinXP on the next, and Backups on another. I can delete the WinXP partition, repartition, and reinstall WinXP on it. This takes almost an hour. Takes a week to reinstall my applications.

    Here's a WAG :)
    Clear CMOS. When it reboots, go into setup and make sure it is set to boot from cd. Put your XP cd in and see what happens. You already know you are going to have to select the correct partition and do an install with the cd. I think something went wrong with the system files, and because you weren't aware of the SFC (system file checker), more things went wrong. Post back, and good luck!

    Does this mean that your partition is FAT32?

    If you want to try running chkdsk from a floppy (try scandisk from DOS, too, if FAT32), make a floppy set with this and boot from the first one:

    Yes my partitions are FAT32.
    I ran the sfc, then rebooted. This time it locked up during the bootup screen. I powered down, restarted. This time I was able to go into Safe Mode. Copied a different ntoskrnl.exe in Windows\system32. Rebooted, am back up running. I do not understand this "thing ".
    By the way I found how to make an MSDOS disk. Put a disk in the drive, open My Computer, RightClick Floppy(A), Click Format, then Create MSDOS Startup Disk. In case anyone wants to know this.

    :D Run SFC again. Delete your old SR Points and create a new one. Then run all the standard scans, do any needed MS patches, reboot, and post back with your success story. :)

    I would suggest to quit copying and /or moving system files. Best to let XP get those straight from the cd. As I understand it, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, please, XP is 5 hives, and if any one get corrupted, or do not synch properly with each other, problems. If you suspect your registry or system files have become corrupted, first use the System Restore tool, and go back to a known good working date. If that doesn't clear up the issue, an SFC usually puts things back in order. Check for updates afterwards- it's kind of an iffy question what patches and changes are preserved. (My experience is that most are intact after sfc, like XP knows legit updates and leaves them alone? But I can't prove or document that, just my experience.)

    Also, since you've done a good job cleaning up with Spybot, AdAware, HijackThis (Good grief, how did we diagnose comps before we could ask for a HJT log??) might as well go all the way and finish cleaning up. I am resurrecting Mike Flynn's famous "Clean Up Good ", slightly edited for clarity and time passed (arghh...most of the links don't work anymore for the registry cleaners!- Do a search on the board to see what people prefer today)

    Mike Flynn's Clean Up Good

    Cleanup
    (You have already done this)
    begin with spy/adware
    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?...n&page=download
    Run this twice delete all it finds, ?ALWAYS? run this before AdAware.
    Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

    AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
    Run only after SpyBot!
    Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files. Delete all it finds
    ************************************************

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

    The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

    It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

    As long as /sageset above has been run on this computer, from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    Then reboot, make another Restore Point, and you should be good to go.

    If you're old enough to have a beer, dad owes you a case when this is through. :D

    Forget the MS DOS boot disk. You need it to flash the BIOS, not much else. You aren't running DOS anymore, anyway, except on Win98. You need to tell that BIOS to let you boot from that XP cd, if you can't boot normally. Might as well set it now to boot from CD first, because I suspect you ain't out of the woods, yet. If you get a BSOD, and you might because you did disable auto restart, right? Give us the exact error message. We can't really rule out anything at this point. Don't move any more system files until we get this sorted out.

    I made another partition and loaded XP on it. A friend gave me a copy of ntoskrnl.exe that he said would lock me up. I made a copy of Windows\system32\ ntoskrnl.exe. Went in to Safe Mode and copied the faulty ntoskrnl.exe. Sure enough, on Reboot it locked up. Following was on the Blue Screen.
    Stop; c000021a {Fatal System Error}
    The Session Manager Initialization System Process Terminated Unexpectdly With A Status of 0xc0000263 (0x00000000 ox00000000)
    The System Has Been Shut Down.
    I booted as mentioned in #15 in this thread. Back to normal. The BIOS is set to Boot from CD first. Auto restart is disabled. Maybe this will take care of ntoskrnl.exe problems. I do not know if any other lockups were caused by anything else, because I just blew away Xp and reloaded. I do not want to keep doing that. I guess I will have to keep going this way, because I do not know of any other. Have tried XP Repair from the CD and got nowhere. Must be doing something wrong.

    I would like to change something else in #15.
    I have put a folder on my C: drive (krnl), and copied a good ntoskrnl.exe to it.
    Go to http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/xpfiles/xpboot.exe Download xpboot, put an empty Floppy Disk in drive and Click xpboot. Name it something you will remember. Start with the disk in the drive. It changes the letter on your CD drives, and shows you what they are on the first screen. Write them down so you remember. (Mine are R & S). (Enter) At A:\> prompt type, (space after copy, space after .exe).
    copy C:\krnl\ntoskrnl.exe C:\windows\system32
    (Enter)
    If asked to overtype, type y, (Enter). Do Ctrl, Alt, Delete to Boot.
    If you can get someone to Burn ntoskrnl.exe from Windows\system32 to a CD, put it in the drive and you can substitute your new CD drive letter for the first C:, and leave off krnl\.
    This works better than MSDOS disk. Hope this helps someone. Sure helps me.
