Hi. Hurricane Isabel has knocked out power to my house. I've brought my Sony Vaio laptop PCG-505TS running Windows 98 to someone's office and tried to connect using my Ethernet card. The problem is that the settings are all wrong for the setup here. I ran winipcfg, but I was unable to change any of the settings there. I tried Renew, Release, Renew All, and Release All--nothing worked. I tried rebooting. Nada.

The last time I tried to use the laptop with the Ethernet card was at a hotel. Nothing that I or their tech guy did made the computer work with their high-speed internet connection. Before that, however, I'd never had a problem using the Ethernet card in hotels, etc. So I know it USED to work with no problem.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem now and how I might fix it?

    Thx.

    Hi Cybernut,

Im gonna step out on a little limb here and suggest going to the IE icon on the desk top and ...

right click>properties>connections>Lan settings and make sure the automaticly detect settings is check marked after that has been done click ok and go back to setup and follow Internet wizrd set up for
I want to set up manually (for Lan)

As far as connecting to the net via someone elses account I would think you might need to use there name and pass to accsess thier DNS server.

Hope this helps a bit I will keep an eye out for a reply.

    Regards,

As you said that you are unable to refresh or renew your setting through winipcg. It's mean the network you are trying to connect don't uses the dhcp server.
May be they are using the static ipaddress for each machine.
In that case u must as the lan adminsitrator for the network mask and available ip address and then put that address in ur eth properties found under network setting in control panel.
