windows XP, don't know which service pack is installed. System is 4 years
    old.

Got the BSOD once but a reboot got the windows loading screen (over and over).
It never finishes the bootup just recycles the loading screen.

Finally got the screen that list all the devices, controllers, etc and noticed
that the text on-screen was jittery but the screen didn't show any
problems that i could spot. A hard boot brought up the loading screen again
and it also had the jitters.

I suspect either the memory, harddrive or something got fried on the MB but
have no way of checking. Problem is intermittent and kinda hard to define but
this is what i can see.

    Open to any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    savagcl

    Hi Clif
So it boots up OK sometimes?

I would remove all connections - power and ribbon and replace.

Renove all plug in cards and memory sticks and replace.

This should eliminate the possibility of corroded/loose connections.

Jittery POST screen is not good news - suggests a basic problem - graphics card?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Run chkdsk /r from a command window

Check out the drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics .....

You could consider resetting the CMOS and maybe replacing the battery. I would check the other items above first.

    PeteC,

Thanks, good suggestions. I'll try them.
Can't run anything, no safe mode, no command prompt. Never gets that
    far into boot.

I can get disk checked tomorrow using another system.

    again, thanks,
    savagcl
