Daughter has new HP PC with XP media center edition.
We have updated everything with Win Update etc.

She has downloaded and paid for a music file from Walmart (WMA) format and is unable to play it.

Keeps getting the following error message:
"The license to play the packaged media is invalid.
C00D277F - Secure storage protection error. Restore your licenses from a previous backup and try again.
    "

    We have referenced KB articles - KB891664, kb891122, kb909993, 810422
    as well as URL http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/troubleshooting.aspx
Probably some other web sites, articles as well.
We have backed up her DRM files.
Then, when we go to the following link to install the latest Windows Media DRM components the UPDATE box does not get highlighted and we get a download error.
    http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=34506
Not sure whether or not some option in IE still needs to be set or what.

Incidentally, I get the same error on my WIN media PC (Dell) when I try to access the link and the UPgrade box.

This is from the above link
    " Security component upgrade
This page lets you upgrade the security components of your digital media player so you can play protected files on your computer.
To upgrade your security components, click Upgrade.

This is where the UPGRADE box appears

Note: When you click Upgrade, your computer will connect to a Microsoft-operated Internet site and send information about your digital media player, including a unique hardware identifier. No information will be sent that can be used to personally identify you or track your activities. Microsoft will then upgrade the security components of your digital media player to ensure that it runs with optimal security. "

Also, in Microsoft Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, where we click Manage Licenses in Windows Media Player 10, we can neither backup nor restore the files. Get security errors in the process.

HP support has been very nice but they appear to know less than I do (which is not saying very much for them). After trying to Contact Walmart support and being kept on hold for over 30 minutes twice, we gave up on that.

Frankly at this point I am stumped and need help.
I know the above is confused but that is because we have gone back and forth through everything and frankly end up going in circles.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jorjab

We had done all of the first steps but never tried the file mentioned in the blog. Will try again and post.

Microsoft just released and we installed a fix for Media Player 10.
    KB910393

This did not fix the problem either but perhaps we have to overwrite the DRM file? I do not really understand how this licensing stuff works and whose licenses are supposed to be in DRM folder. So far she has tried just the one music file from WALMART. I think she plans to try calling walmart tonight and just waiting for however long it takes to get somebody on the line. Maybe they are aware of how to fix.

Still getting same errors as before. Tried link suggested by Spyware dr and that did not help either.

I will eventually try getting support from Microsoft but we do not want to have to pay for this. Software is OEM so we are supposed to go thru HP for any problems.

If anybody is interested I finally fixed the problem although I am not completely sure what did it.
I set all setting security settings in IE to lowest possible. Then tried to get to the upgrade page again at http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=34506 , did this on both my computer and my daughter's. Now I was able to see and click on the upgrade. Once that was done the problem was solved. Have since set settings back. Not sure which setting blocked it or even if that is what did it. On my pc I did nothing with the DRM folder. On my daughter's I emptied it and after the above Upgrade step there was all new information.
Open media player and played music - saw notice it was acquiring licenses and then the music played. or should I say "the Band Played On" ;)

Support from HP has not been very helpful - tried 2 chats with them as well as 3 phone calls. All we got was basically to keep uninstalling Media Player and associated updates and reinstall them. Problem was they knew no more about the product then I did.
