    Hi,
I am running Windows XP Pro with a Creative Labs - Audigy 2 sound card.
Up until 2-3 weeks ago the sound system worked fully with no problems. Since then all system sounds have been dead.
What I mean by this is there are none of the normal system sounds, like when Windows is starting up, shutting down, when you have e-mail, critical stop, and divice connect-disconnect as some. Software that I have like MusicMatch, Weather Bug, and QuickBooks Pro have all there normal music or warning sounds working perfectly, as well as I have "Say the Time, which tells the time on my half hour setting perfectly.
I cheched under divices, and all the sound drivers for Audigy 2 show they are working properly. I fully removed the drivers and Audigy 2 software, and reloaded, but still no system sounds while all other apps have their sounds preforming fully perfect.
Through Control Panel to Sounds and Audio Devices, it shows the mute is not checked, with "SB Audigy 2 Audio [FF40] showing, and under "Sounds ", it show as "Windows Default ", and all the sounds with a speaker next to them put out the correct sound when clicking the button at the bottom of panel.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Richard

    Maybe this?
    No Sound Events Are Played

    Edit:
After having a second look at the article, I see it's for win 2000. I suspect it may be the same for XP though. I'd have a look anyway.

    Hi Zander,
Thanks to your time and help, you have solved my "no system sounds" problem. After taken the steps in your reply to my problem, I hit "restart ", to shut down and start up again, and I had both the "shut down" and "start up" tunes
    play out.
Again, thanks allot for you time and help in solving my
    annoying sound problem.
    Richard

Glad to hear it worked for you and thanks for posting back. It's nice to know the fix works for XP too.
