the computer will not boot the new drive. I used windows setup cd to repair,
but it says the drive is a dynamic drive and cant repair it.

There is a Upgrade/Reinstallation path one can use to do a "repair" reinstallation of XP. During this process (very early on) you will see briefly a prompt at the bottom of the screen to hit "F6" to install RAID drivers. Hit F6 and have a floppy disk already prepared with your SATA drivers on it.

    MSFT KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

(You should also check to be certain any BIOS settings for using SATA have been made).

Microsoft would tell you that it is not possible, that only a clean install or a repair reinstallation would work.

Rather than say it is not possible, I will say it is very tricky. The following suggestion requires more than a little technical expertise.

See the .reg file and discussion in the second half of this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082/
