I'm buying a new Dell computer in the next week or so and am having fun customising my requirements at their online shop. I've chosen a high specification result and am happy with my choice. However, Media Center Edition 2005 comes as part of the menu. I've been using Win XP SP2 for some time and am quite comfortable and pleased with it.

I'm a little concerned (from reading various posts) that Media Center might be problematic or even a white elephant. Is there a consensus of opinion out there as to whether I should simply request Win XP or should I cast aside my insecurities and take on the world of Media Center 2005?

    Thank you.

If you don't click on and launch Media Center you won't even know it's there. I like it even though I don't use it much...It's also about a 100 bucks less then XP Pro. The attached pic will show you the differences between the versions.

Thanks, Steve. It looks as if WMC is a good deal! And, as you say, if I don't choose to open it then I won't even know it's there. :)

    Thank you too Steve :)

I've been looking at Latops from Dell and HP and the "default" OS is MCE and I've resisted the idea of MCE, so thanks for the info - I won't resist :)

    Regards - Charles

I beta tested MCE way back when. MS "gave" me a remote control & receiver which makes it pretty cool. I'm just not much into stuff where I even use MCE muhc.
