Hi, I know there have been threads of previous members who have had updating issues. I was hoping that I could get some specific help, as I've already done some troubleshooting with computer nerds (nerds are better than geeks remember! I have the utmost respect for nerds, hehe). My Windows says it has never updated before, and I can't be positive on whether or not it actually has. A friend of mine took me through some command promt stuff, and he was surprised that this did not help. I didn't notice that this was something that needed to be done, until I got completely frustrated trying to install Zune software. My friend eventually helped me get the software installed, but Windows can't find the driver software to recognize the device. So I'm at a stand still here. I've gotten all the help I can from friends who know computers, and I don't know what to do anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if this problem could be fixed I will bake you some cookies!

I also forgot to add that when I do click on Windows to update, it never goes further than "Checking for updates...... "

Post the last 50-or-so lines from WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

Type this at the command line on an affected system:

    wuauclt /detectnow

wait ten minutes, then post the contents of WindowsUpdate.log starting at the
time the above command was issued.

Sorry, but there's no error there. I suggest the following:

You may want to start a free Windows Update support incident
    request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

    =============================
    Support for Windows Update:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through your usual support contacts.

Wow, are you serious? File an incident report, what will that do for me?

If there's no error, why won't Windows update? It doesn't make sense and I'm about to throw my computer out the window.

    Posting again, ugh.

I tried to connect to Microsoft Support through the link you sent me, and I got this error message: unable to create StdProv WMI query object.

    What does that mean?

Well, if you prefer I start just "shooting" at the problem & hope we hit something, that's fine with me too, I have all these fixes documented...

    So lets start:

    1. Open a command prompt: type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

"The requested pause, continue, or stop is not valid for this service" after entering net stop wuauserv, and yes I was running as admin.

I restarted my computer to try again and got

The Windows Update Service is stopping.................................
The Windows Update Service could not be stopped.

Which is actually what I got the first time. My previous quote was from trying again after receiving this first message.

I also remember the "net stop wuauserv" and "net start wuauserv" from the last person who was trying to help me out when I wanted to install the Zune software. If I remember correctly, we were unsuccessful, and I might have already deleted that folder/file.

So I've been playing around a bit, still nothing has worked. But Windows Update has changed. It no longer sits with "Checking for updates..." and now says 'error code 80080005 Windows encountered an unknown error "

Well, I think your system is a mess if it think stop isn't valid for wuauserv.

I'd bite the bullet & reinstall.

You're right, things only went downhill after this, quite quickly too. Probably because I was trying all these trouble shooting steps...I think my computer basically crashed. I have the opportunity to back everything up which is good, but other than that I'm *******. I really appreciate your help Arie, thanks again.
