windows windows problem

    when i click on the "windows update" icon on the tool bar the window opens and then immediately closes.This also happens if i go to "run" on the desktop and run something like sysedit or win ini.A window opens and closes. Anyone know any reason why and what i need to do to stop it.I'm thinking of reloading my XP home but i'm uncertain whether its neccessary

    There are some viruses which can cause this behavior. Have you done a complete system scan with up-to-date antivirus software?

    If you don't have one installed, there are free scans at Panda and Housecall.
