Windows Vista Windows will not update

    Hi, Ive tried to use the posts at the begining of this section but don't see the tool for vista there. i did a system restore and tried to do windows update and click check for updates and it just keeps searching and never stops. I just finished getting my computer cleaned in the malware section so its not that. What can I do at this point?

    all I find on the site is the same windows stand alone updater and it just runs and runs like the regular one.

    Have you let the updater run over night?

    I've seen it take 5 to 7 hours to install updates on a fresh install of Win 7.

    May be time to think about upgrading as browser support runs out this year for Vista.:eek:

    Like to Windows 7? What would that cost? Any idea? And can I do it with this laptop?

    Hi dodopie. Your laptop isn't officially supported by Windows 7 since Acer only provides Windows Vista drivers for your system.

    I would suggest though that you download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and see if your laptop is compatible with Windows 7.

    Here is how much Windows 7 will cost if you buy a license, Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM.

    I wouldn't get Windows 7 on this old a machine and certainly not a 64-bit OS with only 3GB of RAM.

    I suggest you first try resetting Windows Update:
    • Click Start, and in the Start Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt type the following commands. Make sure that you press Enter after you type each command:
      • net stop wuauserv
      • net stop bits
      • net stop cryptsvc
    • Next (still in the command prompt) type Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat" and press Enter
    • Now we will re-reregister the BITS and Windows Update files. To do this, at a command prompt, type the following commands. Make sure that you press Enter after you type each command:
      • regsvr32.exe atl.dll
      • regsvr32.exe urlmon.dll
      • regsvr32.exe jscript.dll
      • regsvr32.exe vbscript.dll
      • regsvr32.exe scrrun.dll
      • regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
      • regsvr32.exe msxml6.dll
      • regsvr32.exe actxprxy.dll
      • regsvr32.exe softpub.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wintrust.dll
      • regsvr32.exe dssenh.dll
      • regsvr32.exe rsaenh.dll
      • regsvr32.exe cryptdlg.dll
      • regsvr32.exe oleaut32.dll
      • regsvr32.exe ole32.dll
      • regsvr32.exe shell32.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wups.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wups2.dll
      • regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wucltux.dll
      • regsvr32.exe wuwebv.dll
    • Now we reset Winsock. At the command prompt, type netsh winsock reset, and then press Enter.
    • Lastly we restart the needed services. Still at the command prompt type the following commands (followed by Enter after each command):
      • net start wuauserv
      • net start bits
      • net start cryptsvc
    • For Vista we need to clear the BITS queue using the following command: bitsadmin.exe /reset /allusers
    • Now install the latest update client: https://support.microsoft.com/help/949104
    • Reboot & retry Windows Update

    when I do the control shift enter nothing happens? I still entered the first three promps and all were denied

    Open an elevated command prompt. Right-click cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator.

    ok everything worked until I clicked the link and it says fix it is no longer available, there is a list of fixes but I dont see anything about windows updates so I dont know which to use?

    You don't need the fix it. Automatic Updates should be turned on, you can check:
    • Click Start, type Windows update in the search box, and then click Windows Update in the Programs list.
    • In the left pane, click Change settings.
    • Select the option that you want (Install updates automatically).
    Just check that you have the latest version of Wuaueng.dll (as explained in the article).

    Wasn't sure. Sometimes working on more than one broke thing gets confusing. And sometimes fixing one broke thing fixes a lot of things.

    OK, I did a test install and ran into the same problem. This is the solution:
    1. Disable automatic Windows Updates Windows Update > Change settings > Important updates > Never check for updates (not recommended) and re-boot.
    2. Open services.msc, scroll down to Windows Update and stop the service.
    3. Download the following updates manually(1):
      1. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3078601
      2. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3109094
      3. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3185911
      4. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3191203
      5. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3203859
      6. Microsoft Update Catalog KB3204723
    4. Install the updates one-by-one, re-booting after each update in the order listed above. Make sure that the Windows Update service stays switched off in between reboots (otherwise you'll get stuck at "Checking for updates..." when trying to install these updates).
    5. After the last update has installed, run a manual Windows Update (Windows Update > Check for Updates), it should work now.
    My clean Vista Ultimate SP2 showed 216 updates (677.5 MB) available.

    (1) I had to download these files using Google Chrome, Internet Explorer on this Vista displayed an error.

    ok when I click on the kb3078601 it says its for x64 base system. Is this for 64 bit as mine is 32? I downloaded it and it tried to do the update but it said its not for my system. Ill try the others
