They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, and you will need to restart your computer. Upon returning, the software will be installed. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave

BTW - no request to restart the PC - and the new site worked fine :)

Machine specific? MS likes you better than me? Glitch in my machine? :D

Glad it worked well for you, Pete. ;)

More salt in the wound, I didn't have a reboot request either. Update went like a charm. Thanks for the heads up. V5 update never mentioned or requested either the update or a checkup for such. No telling how long it would have taken me to notice this was available.

I think once updated the OS gets redirected via software automatically. Last night when I clicked on my "windows update icon" prior to using your link I went to the v5 url. No redirect. I expected, if v6 was available v5 url would update automatically. It didn't. I even ran through update check routine to see if this would come up as an available selection. Nope! I had to use your link to get the v6 check and install. Now when using any icon (on OS) or url I am automatically pulled to the v6 site.

I'm an sp1/MSoffice 2000 user. Not sp2 or MSoffice 2003-up. Perhaps this makes a difference on the v5-v6 party invitation.

    Ouch!

Alright, I apologise for the MVP remark. :D

Absolutely no idea why I was prompted to restart, and no-one else seems to be having that result. Oh well, at least if someone else does, they can't say I didn't warn them! LOL

    Jim,

Seems to me going back to WU from the Start menu still went to v% until after I had rebooted (a second time of course  ). It now goes to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

    Ann,

I looked around for an announcement from MS prior to posting, and went to WU thinking maybe it would be unveiled there. Nothing found.

    No reboot required here either.
I did spot a possible slight issue. I added "http://update.microsoft.com" to my Trusted Zone, and now the website is listed as "Unknown Zone (Mixed) ", with the Trusted icon.

After several reboots, the old v5 URL is still shown on my shortcuts to Windows Update, but I am seamlessly redirected to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
    (as mentioned by noahdfear).
Wonder if the re-direct will be perpetual or if we, at some point, should update our shortcuts as well. There is no change to wupdmgr.exe either.

What shortcuts? The only one I keep to winupdate is via IE Tools menu, which now goes directly to version 6 update with no redirect.

TonyT--I created a shortcut to WU which is in Links on my Toolbar. (Saves me a whole click over clicking on Tools. :) )
I guess what you are telling me is that since I created the shortcut, I should change the URL.
I also see that clicking Tools|Windows Update also involves a redirect. It starts at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ .

yes, if you created the shortcut then you should edit it.
just checked again and my Tools menu is in fact a redirect.
In fact, now that I think about it, it's been a redirect since upgraded from version 4 update to version 5 update, when version 4 update there was no redirect.

    nice guid Arie.

you should point out that once a user visits update.microsoft.com and installs everything, he will thereafter be taken directly to version 6 update via the default windows update links in IE and MS applications. As well, if one has auto-update service disabled then no shortcuts to Microsoft Update are created on the system EXCEPT that the IE Tools menu link to Windows Update now redirects to Microsoft Update even though the menu text says Windows Update.

Arie--Thanks for the clarification. Wonder why MS did not do a better job of announcing MS Update and clarifying the difference between it and Windows Update.

I've been away for two weeks and yesterday I came back to the proximity of my home. This may have been discussed elsewhere on here but anyway:

I went to our flying club and installed the recent batch of updates for Windows XP. I was offered the update to "Windows Update v6 ".

When I came home and did the same job on my own computer, I was not offered the update to "Windows Update v6 ".

The difference between the two computers is that the former runs Windows XP only and the latter runs Office XP (2002) as well.

    Is this normal?

    TIA,
    Christer

I forgot to mention that on the computer at the club, I clicked the yellow shield and let it download and install. On my own computer I downloaded the updates from "Windows Update Catalog" to the harddisk and installed from there.

On the computer at the club, I was also offered (and accepted) the new "Microsoft Update ". First WUv6 and then MU which appeared at the right hand side on the web page.
