    Hi,

My neighbour last night let the Windows Updates run (10 in total) and afterwards allowed the restart and has since refused to boot up.

On start-up, it automatically displays the boot menu. If I select any of the 3 Safe Mode (with Networking or with Command Propmpt) options the screen fills up with file names (in dos screen), stops and won't go any further. Switching off and restarting takes me back to the boot menu. If I select Last Known Good Config or Start Normally, the Windows XP start up screen appears very dimly, quickly replaced with BSOD then restart and back to the boot menu.

I have his System Restore CD but I can't get his laptop to read the CD drive.

    Any ideas please?

He has an Advent Laptop with Win XP Media edition.

Those "file names" and the BSOD message are the important part
Please copy down as much (if not all) that you can see, and post back with them :)

Hi kimsland, thanks for the quick reply.

When the screen fills after a start in safe mode attempt the screen fills with:-
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\*****

***** being different file names all with .sys extension.

As for the BSOD, I can't pause the screen to take a look! Any suggestions?

Hi keithy397. Do you have a Windows XP CD?

If you do then try following these steps:

    1. Since you tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration without success then boot from a Windows XP CD. 2. When you boot from the CD do you see an option that says Press R to boot into the recovery console? If you see that option press R.
    3. Once you boot into the recovery console it will ask you which Windows installation you wish to log into.
    4. Press 1 and hit enter.
    5. Next type the administrator password. If you don't have a password then leave it blank otherwise type it in and hit enter.
    6. Next type the following commands and hit enter after each one.

    fixboot
    fixmbr
    chkdsk /r

You may be asked to confirm an action after typing in the commands. Type Y to confirm the action if you are asked. After check disk has finished checking your harddrive type exit to quit setup. Hopefully the computer will now boot.
    7. If the system still doesn't boot then power off the machine, open the case up and take out the harddrive. If you have another computer hook up the harddrive as a slave drive where you can copy all the important data off the slaved drive onto another harddrive.
    8. If you would rather not hook up the harddrive as a slave drive then try Performing a Repair Installation of Windows XP.

Let me know if you can get the computer to boot after performing the above steps. :)

    Thanks for your reply.

Currently my neighbour is out and has left me with a System Restore CD only. If he's got the XP CD I'll try what you suggest when he returns. In it's current state though, I cannot get his laptop to boot, nor can I get it to read the CD. It's as if it's in a unrecoverable loop.

I've googled about this and it seems there are a heck of a lot of people suffering from the same because of this month's Windows Updates, frickin Microsoft.

I'll get back to you when I have some news.

Here is a free Recovery Console BootCD for Windows XP
Burn the ISO to disc (I recommend free ImgBurn to do this)
Then boot from it and perform a CheckDisk (Chkdsk /R)

Oh my God I am experiencing exactly the same problems...My has done window update last night so after the updates were finished installing, it the pc to restart.

I have tired and done everything the above person mentioned there and stil nothing is happening. What i want to know is if this problem can be sorted without having to re-install a new window? Are there any other option beside to re-install new window?
I really don't want to loose all my information on my hard drive so i really do not want to reformat and start all over. I also don't have the recovery CD or any Window xp CD to sort this problem out.

p.s. It would be REALLY REALY HELPFUL if you could try and explain to me everything in PLAIN English as i'm not good at using technology. Thank You Very Very Much

Please refer to the post just before yours to download and create and run the free XP Recovery Console disc.

Note: It is always best for members to create their own new thread.
The reason is that although the fault may look to be exactly the same, the remedy may be different for each computer. Otherwise we would just state do this... for every fault like this (of which we cannot)

I will just mention straight up that you can order your Windows Setup disc (or Recovery disc) from your computer manufacturer, or you can purchase a new Setup disc from here: XP Home, XP Pro

Having the Windows Setup disc is useful, when a Repair (without losing any data) is required. Some guides for this are located here:XP Home, XP Pro
Or re-install clean as the last choice.

Many manufacturers (OEM) computers come with a Recovery Partition that can be accessed by pressing a Function key (like F10 etc..) when the computer starts up (before Windows starts to load) You may need to contact your computer manufacturer or read your online manual to confirm the correct key and further instructions.
In this case you could use a free BootCD like Knoppix to backup your user data first, and then Restore Windows clean.

    I hope this helps.

I applied MS updates on XP Home/32 bit, Vista/32bit, and W7/64 bit today ... all rebooted properly and run fine. Only difference I can see, I do NOT have updates set to automatic. Not sure why that would cause a problem.

Interesting read, although I haven't noticed any issues with the recent Windows Updates on the systems that I have updated this month. ;)

    Yes "some computers" affected
I'm trying to work out the fix, to remove the Security Update when Windows won't start.
    If anyone knows, please post
Oh by the way my manual updates went through without an issue. ;)

Nothing to do with automatic updates settings,

Yesterday my system downloaded 9 updates (below) and I haven't experienced any problems.

    KB977165, KB978706, KB977914, KB975560, KB978251, KB975713, KB9878037, KB971468, KB978262

Most reporting this problem claim 10 or 11 updates, I'm wondering if it's one of the extra two that caused the issue or whether it's one of the above only affecting some systems?

FWIW My system updated Thursday 11 - Feb - 2010 @ 03:00 GMT (maybe MS pulled updates when they realised there was a problem).

EDIT: I'm posting this in Steve's thread as well. I hope admin doesn't mind the double post but as it's such a serious issue and it may help with identifying the bad update, the more who see this the better.

As I posted in another thread, it is caused by KB977165. Here's the fix:

    • Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console.
    • If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
    • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
    • Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (press ENTER)
    • Type: BATCH spuninst.txt (press ENTER)
    • Type: exit (press ENTER)

Thanks for your help and the fix guys, much appreciated.

Microsoft need their arses kicking around the globe for issuing sh1t like that. What happened to quality control/assurance etc? There again, Microsoft - say no more.

    Diolch yn fawr.

    You're welcome,

Once you've tested Arie's fix let us know how it goes and don't forget to mark the thread resolved if all is well.

Thanks Arie, I have copied that information down in full
But I must mention that the F6 driver load is not required, this being the same on Windows Repair.
ie Once the F6 Sata driver has been originally installed, there is never a need to install it again except obviously on a clean install. This includes the Recovery console that will 'pick up' the already installed driver from the system drive.

But to avoid adding further debate, this information supplied is at least complete, and certainly helpful.

My neighbour is currently searching for his XP install CD, as soon as it is found I'll work my way through the fix and report back.

    Thanks again.

If you can't find it just use the RC.ISO I posted, since they are the same in getting to the Recovery Console.

I'm confident it will work though, that with checkdisk, and in extreme circumstances removing the other latest installed updates. (if required)
