Hello Folks, I had an install error while attempting to install XP Critical update Q817287. I ran a search and found this Q817287.log:

Service Pack started with following command line:
    ***

    InstallInfCatalogFile: Installing c:\36c745f999101617288e9a36466420\update\Q817287.cat as _000000_.cat...
    ***

VerifySize: Unable to verify size: Source = NULL: c:\windows\_000000_.cat

    ***

    InstallInfCatalogFile: Installation succeeded.
    ***

    DoInstallation: ValidateSingleFileSignature Failed: STR_FAILED_INF_INTEGRITY
    ***

Q817287 Setup encountered an error: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.
    ***

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.
    ***

Message displayed to the user: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.
    ***

    User Input: OK
    ***

I have no idea how to fix the problem and I keep getting Auto update queries asking me to install Q817287 but it fails each and every time.

    This old swabbie needs help.

Hope this explanation is not too complicated for you.
Cryptographic Services - Provides three management services: Catalog Database Service, which confirms the signatures of Windows files; Protected Root Service, which adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this computer; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificates. If this service is stopped, these management services will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

In Control Panel click on Administrative Tools and then on Services.
Scroll down to Cryptographic Services and right click on this name. Then click on the word "Start ". Make sure it is set for Manual or Automatic and not Disabled.
You should restart your computer to see the changes and then try Windows Update again.

    Hope this helps.
