    hey,
since a few months now, i got alot of processes starting up when i start my computer. However, there is only one application that i start at boot up which is norton internet security 2005.

    I checked: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run.
The only items in that list are:
ccApp, Fortis Secure Layer Config (cseinst.exe -o-h), Symantec NetDriver Monitor. (the same items as in the msconfig -> boot list.)

I ran several anti spyware programs (adaware, spybot S&D, shredder, spyware doctor), i ran a full system virus scan about a week ago, i ran easy cleaner (a program to delete unecessary files, invalid registery keys etc), and i uninstalled alot of unnesessary software.

When i look in task manager -> processes, i see right after i booted, before i started any programs manually, 38-40 processes. Thats alot.

However i dunno why that is. There are alot of double processes in the list.
What can i do to decrease the amount of processes?

Can you give me some tips?

I dont know how i can copy a full list of processes with more detailed information but here are the names:

    alg.exe
    ccap.exe
    wscntfy.exe
    wmiprvse.exe
    msmsgs.exe
    msiexec.exe
    explorer.exe
    ati2evxx.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    ati2evxx.exe
    ccevtmgr.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    spbbcsvc.exe
    winlogon.exe
    sndsrvc.exe
    wuauclt.exe
    issvc.exe
    navapsvc.exe
    csrss.exe
    ccsetmgr.exe
    dcfssvc.exe
    ccproxy.exe
    smss.exe
    savscan.exe
    mspmspsv.exe
    wrsssdk.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    crypserve.exe
    symlcsv.exe
    svchost.ex

i use: windows XP home edition

    thanks in advance

stefan - Welcome to the Board :)

38 - 40 running processes is not at all unusual - there are currently 54 running on my machine running Pro SP2.

They are mostly Windows processes necessary for Windows to run - if you look in Task Manager > Processes under User Name, those with your name against them are related to programs you loaded as User.

There will always be multiple incidences of svchost.exe running, currently 5 on mine.

If you do a scan in Ad-Aware you will see the number of processes running plus the number of process modules loaded - nearly 2000 on my m/c.

You may be able to reduce the number of processes slightly by disabling some Windows Services that are not required, but really this is best left well alone unless you are 100% confident in what you are doing :)

In Task Manager > Processes you will see the % CPU taken up by each task - when it is actually running - most of the values will be zero as the processes basically run when required.

I would leave well alone :D

TASK LIST PROGRAMS provides descriptions and recommendations for a lot of the stuff that is running.

Start > Run > type: cmd > enter > type: tasklist /svc > enter > will display a list of processes running under svchost.exe
