Now this is getting confusing even to me

When you say Task Manager am I correct that you use Cntrl-Alt-Del to bring it up ? I do.

I used Best Buy web Site for this testing. It is a short name and easy to remember :)
    _______________________________________________

When I select Best Buy from Favorites in the Explorer title bar.

The Files on the HD remain it the Left 1/4 protion of the screen and Best Buy web page appears in the right 3/4 portion.

    Under Processes nothing changes,

Under Apps Best Buy shows and leaves when I close Explorer
    ______________________________________________

    When I open IE.

In processes IEXPLORE.EXE is added. And drops out when I close IE.

In APPs Best Buy appears and leaves when I close IE.

I also check my Kerio Firewall and I see that EXPLORER had been added. SO that tells ( me at least ) that Explorer went to the Internet as a new and separate application.

It is of course now deleted.

    HOLY Mackeral

It looks what shows up where is relavant to how you go there.

I just posted the original reply. Went up to Favorites and selected Best Buy.

In Apps it showed " BestBuy.com- Microsoft Internet Explorer. "

So does this say that Which Favorites you use makes a difference ?

:D I just gave up trying to figure this one out any more :D

" "So does this say that Which Favorites you use makes a difference ?" "

I dont use the favorites on the start menu could but dont, nor the
one in explorer.but links on the taskbar is handy , with a nohome link ..

But if'n I did our firewall would ask if explorer could go out ,No mater which one selected
BUT only the first time --ummm swicthover (explorer to IE) per maybe windows session.

All that goofing around coused my google to(gaagle) not work properly.
Had it appear once more since then on explorer..even though i had uncheck already once ..still though I haven't had to do the
    folder options bit...YET :)
    Google Toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/index-beta.php
You all probaly seen my other post..

I saw once the supposed tweak to remove the go from explorer
But was to cousious to use it, afaiak it would goof up IE..If I ever did the switchover again

Just maybe if I quit messing around this reply will make it this time.

The ones in the Start Menu are about all I do use. But I found they were using Windows Explorer.

I set a permanent Firewall rule to Deny access by Windows Explorer. So now the favorites in the Start menu use MSIE. And if I open Explore and select a Favorite from there all I get is a page not found message. YIPPEE !!!!.

The less things that have access to the Internet the better I like it. And I do not know how much security Windows Explorer has. If it has the same as IE then it might be OK.

I have messed with Explore more in the past few days than I have in Years. I use the much better PowerDesk.

I myself keep very few links in the Taskbar. I find that the less amount of links I have the less Windows seems to get confused ( Along with me )

And as few as possible in the Systray.

I have also found that Shortcuts to a program appearing in more than one Desktop folder may create problems. If I make changes in one they may not be reflected in the other. I found this out in Win98FE.

Well, I gotta go work on two PCs that were brought to me last evening. Both were dead but one is now working. The MB was changed. A different Sound cards ( back in the same PCI slot ) was added. Then the machine allowed to boot ( or attempt to ) back to the original HD. A 98 SUD bootup and re-install of WinSE worked WONDERS. Outside of a few program errors it is purring like a Kitten with Onbaord Video producing 800x600 32bit cokor.

Now get this. BOTH have been in a Tech shop twice.

    Later

A few comments in reply to BillyBob's last post:
    • "I have messed with Explore more in the past few days than I have in Years. I use the much better PowerDesk. "
I, too, learned a few things about Explorer, and I use it every day. I like it because navigation is quick and easy, particularly when the Windows Classic view is used. The one place where Explorer falls short, for me, is when I want to compare the contents of two folders side by side. Then, I use the free AB Commander Lite, rather than PowerDesk, which I find unnecessarily "busy ".
    • "I myself keep very few links in the Taskbar. I find that the less amount of links I have the less Windows seems to get confused ( Along with me ) "
I guess it all depends on how many things you have going on at the same time. I always have Explorer, my email client, and my browser open, so there are buttons in the taskbar for them, as well as for whatever other program(s) I may be using at the same time. I do a lot of graphics editing, and may have several programs open simultaneously, doing different things.
    • "And as few as possible in the Systray. "
This is not the problem with XP that it is with Win9x, because XP is not a resource-based system, as 9x is. The tray icons represent programs, loaded at startup, which are running in the background. With 9x, each one represented an expenditure of system resources but, with XP, the more the merrier. :) Note that I show 20 icons in the tray, plus the clock program, which also runs at startup.

Actually, that screenshot was taken in response to one of your earlier questions, about whether I use Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open Task Manager. I don't normally need access to it and, when I do, I usually can't remember the keyboard shortcut, so I have it on my Start menu. And, this is one of the best features of Windows ... the GUI can be set up almost any way you choose. The three icons visible on the desktop are the only ones there, because I don't use the desktop, preferring to work from Explorer and the Start menu.

I did, too, but this is something you just have to be aware of. When you change one, you change the others, as well, by copying the changed one to the location(s) of any duplicate shortcut(s). My shortcuts are all in my Start menu folder in C:\Docs and Settings, so it makes it easier to keep track of duplicates.

re: the last reply by JSS3rd

Now my Friends, we are down to the REAL Nitty Gritty of things.

Personal likes and dislikes and ways of setting things up.

I agree with Explorer being OK for some things. But when wanting to compare contents of more than one folder it does leave a little to be desired.

The Systray deal is again a personal choice.

This is what makes some of these discussions a little tough sometimes.

There are SO, SO, SO many ways of setting things up but still wind up at the same destination.

Also it was recommened to me by a long time Friend that I allow Windows Explorer to access the Internet as a sort of backup for IE.

Now that I have investigated and learned more about it I have changed it to Allow.

( more learning this AM.) When resetting it I see it is told to use Internet Explorer ( Iexplore.exe )

BTW. I now have Window XP Pro activated. It was down to " Do it or Lose it ".

:) And I will be damned if I want to lose it :)

HEHE !!. I was just looking at my previous reply and see that my Keyboard needs a few SPELLING lessons. ( I never did pass any spelling BBBBBBBs.) :D

That's why I said, in my last post:
    • "...this is one of the best features of Windows ... the GUI can be set up almost any way you choose. "
I migrated to the PC in the summer of 1997 after ten years on the Amiga platform, when it became apparent, with the advent of Win95, that the PC could do a whole lot more things a whole lot better.

Because I was used to the Amiga's graphical interface, I dived right into Win95 without reading any documentation, and began setting the Windows GUI up in a way that worked for me. I learned what I could and could not do the hard way, with a lot of help from forums like this one.

I am now on my sixth PC, with XP Pro (three of my earlier PCs, all updated to Win98 SE, have passed on to friends and relatives and are in everyday use), but I still use the Windows Classic look, with a highly customized Start menu and directory structure.

Too many users new to the PC don't even know that the GUI can be configured differently from the way the Gnomes of Redmond present it right out of the box. Or, if they do, they're afraid to experiment. I'm sure there will be those who disagree with me, but I think the "luna" interface (the XP default) is absolutely dreadful, and is a terrible disservice to new users, particularly in the way the Start menu is configured. But, I suppose, with enough time one can get used to anything.

Hey BB here is a download for IEspell checker. Sits on your IE toolbar and you just click on it when writing a reply. Makes me look like a spelling genius. I misspelled genius and it caught it.

Thank you Bmoore1129. I will have a go at it.

    JSS3rd

You are so right about new users. And that is the way Mr. Gates and Company want it.

I was bit fearful myself until I just said " Hey !! are you going to let $199 set on the shelf ?" Answer was " No Way Jose "

I gambled ( big time I think ) when I put XP overtop of SE. But it looks like I won that bet.

The only problem that I had putting one OS over the other was when I put ME overtop of 98FE. BIG MISTAKE

But XP Pro is running very well. No error messages other than ones that may come up when I do something wrong. But just undoing it fixes it. No hangups or freezes. That is AFTER I got the PROPER Video and Audio drivers installed.

ALL PREVIOUS programs are useable ( and have been since day one ) except one real Ancient DOS program which I do not ( and never did ) care about anyway.

All LAN games FLY. Our Internet GOLF is absolutely GREAT. Again AFTER getting the right Video and Audio drivers. Before that it left a bit to be desired.
