This just appeared (in Windows XP Home, Internet Explorer 6.0.2900) - when using the Favorites service, selecting a defined favorite site results in the following:
"Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search." The page includes an 'OKAY' button, which, upon being clicked, calls up another Explorer page, and the requested site is accessed.
I have to be honest and admit that this problem came about following installation of XP Service Pack 3, motivated by the vain hope that this action might correct a growing skein of troubles with this machine. SP3 won't uninstall, naturally, and no recourse to Restore, I already tried. Frankly, a full clean re-install is right around the corner, but as this HDD is a clone, I can try a few more things before giving up entirely. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Garth

Does it happen with ALL favorites or just one?

What happens when you create a new favorite for one of the broken ones?

    Steve, Arie:
Thank you both for the quick responses. Since I'm currently operating with the prime HDD operating (without SP3 installed) I can't attempt a rework of a favorite to see the result right now. Steve, to answer your question, I tried several addresses in several Favorites files, and was convinced that the hiccup was universal. I'll check on some rewrites later with the other drive installed. Arie, as far as the possibility of a mismatch between SP3 and IE7...is the problem more SP3 not operating well with IE6, or IE6 not a matchup with SP3, or...you know what I mean. Right now, I'm more inclined toward doing a 'fresh' clone and staying with IE6 without SP3 for observation purposes. That was working well for me - and I have yet to read any reports enthusiastically recommending SP3. Any comments in that area?
    Thanks again.
    Garth.

IE6 is way too old for me. IE7 is more secure then IE6, so I'll recommend IE7 (till IE8 will be available, which looks to be more secure again compared to IE7).

I'm not a fan of SP3. But I would just try it & if you have no problems you are OK. I got problems with a PCIMCIA wireless adapter after installing SP3 (on my laptop which I triple boot with Linux & Vista), so I just uninstalled SP3 & went back to SP2.

I just installed IE7 and that seems to have solved the problem stated in my first post. I haven't fully investigated the ramifications of SP3 as yet, but did discover that it wouldn't uninstall from my system, so I'm going to stay with experimenting with the clone drive until I'm personally convinced that this config is right for me. I will freely admit that I'm struggling with a VERY buggy system at the moment which is going to take a lot of tweaking before it's in tune again. Thanks for the assistance (and you too, Steve), and stay tuned for another thread concerning loss of access to Display properties.
    Garth.
