No way to tell exactly what problem Windows Explorer ran into from that message. It never tells you anything useful.

Could have been just a random error that won't happen again (or not very often) or could indicate a problem with your PC.

    Do this:

    - Run an online virus scan from Housecall. Free and always up to date.

    - do the following
... click start~run then type in cmd and click OK.
... type in chkdsk /f and press ENTER. When it tells you something about not being able to do the job and would you like to reboot so it can, answer Y(es) and then reboot.

If you get the error again at some point, check your event logs for a warning or error that happened at the time you got the message and post any that look like they could be connected on here. Easiest is to right-click My Computer, left-click Manage then go to the event logs and look at both system and applications. If you see an event you want to find out about, click it open, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a copy to your clipboard) then paste it into a post on the forum.

Thanks. Just the info I needed. The fix below is taken directly from the Microsoft web site and saves me lots of typing.

    Hi Newt,

I did follow the procedures you posted but it's not booting from CD.

My motherboard BH6. The boot sequence i set up was
    CD-ROM, C, A.

    Thanks.

Hmmmm. Should be working. Try setting it to CD, A, C so the hard drive is the very last thing it tries to look at. Might help. Otherwise, you may have to follow the instructions on another current thread for making an XP boot floppy, booting from it, changing to the CD drive, and starting the CD that way.

Did you get at least this message when you restarted your computer?

OK, so you'll need to access your BIOS, and set it so that you can boot from the CD-R.

The most common way of accessing the BIOS is to press the Delete key when re-booting the system, but you might need to press another key, check your computers documentation if pressing [Del] doesn't work.

Once inside the BIOS, look for an option to set the boot sequence.

I did set up a boot sequence in BIOS setting as CD-ROM, C, A.

I can't put CD-ROM first and C last. Because there is no such sequence in BIOS settings.

I still can't figure out how to fix the problem: still having computer rebooted itself at some point of the day. One area- behind the fan- is getting hot apart from the CD problem I mentioned above.

    Any other idea?

    Thanks.

I am not sure if it is power supply fan or case fan. But it's not too hot to touch. But hotter than usual.

I made 6 boot floppy disks for window xp professional with download from microsoft page. I did follow the boot up procedure in floppy disks and when asked I put XP professional CD-ROM in. And yet it's not booting from CD. I set up boot sequence as CD-ROM, C, A.

    Any idea?

    Thanks.

It sounds like you may have a problem with your BIOS.

I'd suggest going to the mfg. web site and getting the latest update then flashing the BIOS. That should help unless you have a physically faulty chip.

    BIOS Setting

I went to the manufacturer's website and I found BH6 and BH6 1.1. So, I opened the computer and checked the motherboard
found AB BH6. But when I ran the AIDA32, it said mother board is
BH6 1.1. Which one do i upgrade? Will there be a problem if I upgrade the wrong one?

    Thanks.

Please don't post a copy from this thread as a new thread (deleted). You may have to wait a while for further responses to your last post - if indeed anybody knows the answer.
    __________________________________________________
    1. Check your motherboard manual - if you have one - for the board revision - if any, but ......

    2. Aida32 should tell you the BIOS version. Cross check this with System Info (Start > Run > type msinfo32 > OK

    2. Back up your BIOS to floppy (and HD)

    3. Load the BIOS which has a similar ID, eg if you have 1017 you should load 1017a or higher - check the bios dates on the manufacturer's web site.

If you load the wrong BIOS you have a backup of the original to restore, but read (print out) any 'how to' file which accompanies the flash utility, particularly how to restore the BIOS to a previous version.
