    Hi
I recently started to install (setup) win xp pro on what I thought was a clean Hard Drive. When I got to the agreement I decided not to continue.
Now when I boot my computer I get a choice of continuing the win xp setup or starting win 98. This choice only appears for a moment and if I don't select win 98 it starts to try setting up win xp.
How can I eliminate the win xp option and return to win 98 only?
    Thanks
    Lewis

If it wasn't too long ago, restart in DOS mode, and type:
    scanreg /restore
revert to a date from before your install try

Restart with a bootdisk in a floppy drive. You will get to A:\> prompt. Type C: and hit Enter. You'll land at C:\> prompt

Would you post the contents of these files. You can use Notepad to open them. Note: Msdos.Sys is a Hidden file.
    C:\config.sys
    C:\autoexec.bat
    C:\msdos.sys

The registry is backed up once per day that the machine is booted/rebooted and by default goes back 5 days. If you tried to restore yesterdays backup it would also be corrupt since this problem started at least two days before that post. Try the oldest restore available.

This is what I think you should do. Create a startup floppy, or go to Bootdisk's and download a file for 98SE that will create one for you by doubleclicking the file with a floppy in the drive.
Boot with the floppy and choose without CDROM support. When it is done booting, you will be at the A:\> prompt. Use these commands, do the first one twice, it will appear to do nothing.
    fdisk /mbr
    sys a: c:

The second command should return "system files transferred ". Take out floppy, and boot the computer.
