    Hello,
I am on a network of about 10 computers. Our Server is running NT 4, and all the other computers are Windows 98, except mine, which has just been upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional.

My problem involves accessing the internet. All the other computers on the network work just fine. On my computer, I can view webpages with internet explorer, but cannot interact with other computers on the internet in any other way. I can not telnet or ftp with the built in windows programs, or other programs, I can't even ping computers outside our network. I have tried both the FQDN and IP addresses for outside computers, to no avail.

We are connected to the internet by dial-up connection on the NT computer.

The wierdest part is that I can surf the net just fine. I had this problem before, on Windows 98, and I was hoping to fix it by upgrading to 2000. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

The only thing I can think of that would cause that behavior is if you somehow didn't have access to the TCP ports for anything other than HTTP. A firewall could be set up that way. There might even be a way to restrict only one machine on the network from using certain ports.

For instance - the well known (standard) port number for some of the things you mentioned are:

    ftp 20/21 (data and connection)
    Telnet 23
    SMTP 25
    HTTP 80
    POP3 110

If you somehow were only allowed to use 25, 80, 110, you could do email and http but not the others.

Thanks for the info. We're looking into those possibilities now. There is no Firewall, but there is a proxy server.
Once again, thanks for the prompt response.

If it's MS Proxy 2, you may need the winsock proxy client (check control panel on a working machine) installed to run winsock applications.

I could never, ever, ever thank you enough. I have been scouring the internet for months trying to find someone else who has this problem, and how to fix it. I guess I was looking in totally the wrong places. Installing the winsock proxy client solved everything.

    Once again, thank you.
