I'm having trouble with my Windows 2000 Advanced server machine. Randomly while using the machine it just freezes. No mouse movement, no blue screen, no response from Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I'm actually using this server machine as a development box as server contains a full version of IIS which is useful for web development.

(Although I would have thought that the server edition should be *more* reliable then say Pro or Home version)

My machine is a 1.2ghz Athlon, VIA chipset motherboard w/ sound (AC97), Dual display GForce2 AGP & SiS 6326 PCI, 100mb NIC.

At first I thought it was my SiS card causing trouble as if I turned video acceleration off on it, it locked up a lot less, but every now and again it still locks up.

I've tried disabling my SiS card, turning all other (Video & Audio) acceleration off, making sure I have all the latest drivers / patches installed, but it still locks up regulary.

Does anybody know what could be causing this? Could it still be my SiS card, or is it likely to be something else (PCI bus problem? etc.)

Also what would be the best logging / diagnostic program to have running that might catch the error or at least give some indication as to the cause?

I'm not sure this'll help, but here's what the event logger makes of the crashes:

    Event ID:6008 (every time)
    Type: Error
    Source: EventLog

(this is the last few crashes)
    Code:

Have you applied or re-applied the latest (SP2) service pack? A flakey UPS has also been known to cause such problems.

    I've had SP2 installed for a while, should I try re-installing it?

Also I've no UPS system so that shouldn't be causing problems (tho could it be my ATX psu?)

    Bios diagnostic seems normal tho

I guess an internal power supply could cause the problem. But that's not what I'd seen noted. I'd definitely reapply the SP, though.

    Hi,

I can't uninstall my current SP2 installation, as it's not add/remove program control panel, do you have to un-install it from somewhere else?

I waited for it to back up system files, so it should be able to uninstall.

Would you recommend a fresh 2000 install? or is there something else I can try to fix the problem?

No need to uninstall the SP. Just re-instal SP2.

I've reinstalled SP2 and used it for a bit, but it still locks up now and again

What else could I try? are there any decent diagnostic / test programs I could run to try and figure out what happens?

Also what's that string of data that the system log stores, is it anything to do with the crash or is it just a timestamp or something?
