Well I done went and did it.

I now have Windows Update V5 and SP2 installed.

It SCARED the heck out of me for a while as it did not seem to going anywhere. But it is in now and things seem to be a faster and smoother.

    Found no problem yet anyway.

It even told me my Anti-Virus was up to date.

    Time will tell.

Well, congratulations ...... you've got me beat as I've only been thinking about it thus far. I'll assume this is RC#2?

I just went to Windows Update and it was install V5 or go without.

I figured AH heck If it messes up I will have two weeks to get over it.

I am going to San Diego for my Son's retirement from the U.S. Navy.

And in the meantime I am STILL TRYING to figure out where 20 years has gone.

    I believe you assume correctly.

I am waiting for the actual release but it is great to know that you have installed without any problems. A lot of people are going to wait weeks before they install SP2 but my computer is due to be re-formatted amongst other things and if SP2 is out as expected I would prefer to have it installed when XP has just been installed afresh. It is also good to know you didn't have to install it by formatting first! I have read that we should format or a repair install yet other reports say we can just install over SP1.

Done it, so far great... It didn't c Zone Alarm on one PC, but was ok with Norton(NIS). It said I did not have a AV on my Desktop but the same AV on the laptop was ok. It also fixed some unanswered questions I had with wireless networking. Fingers crosss early days. :D

If it were a case of needing to format it would not be on this machine. Or at least be waiting a bit longer. Or this HD would be copied to another and that one used. I have not formated anything other than a new drive for YEARS.

SP2 RC2 issue with digital signatures

ASIDE: Not only did the SP2 RC2 install go smoothly (although slowly) the uninstall seems to work well, too.

SUMMARY: I think XP SP2 RC2 changes the confirmation behavior when I send a digitally signed message in Outlook 2003. Should I notify someone at Microsoft?

DETAILS: I have Outlook set to automatically add a digital signature. Without SP2 I click on Send and a confirmation comes up each time. I have my security level set to medium, so I don't enter a password, I just click on OK. With SP2 I get the confirmation dialog once, and then following messages are signed without confirmation.

I tested this extensively yesterday, after installing SP2 RC2. I inadvertantly send a signed message to a mailing list, so I checked all the settings and tried everything I could think of to get things functioning as with SP1. That was when I discovered that it only asks the first time it access the information. Then I removed SP2 RC2 overnight. This morning, after a reboot, everything works the way it did before, with SP1 back on the machine. I confirm every message.

Since SP2 is being billed as a security update, I wondered if I should report this to someone. Any thoughts?

wvilberg - Welcome to the Board :)
Yes - there should be a 'File a Bug' icon on your desktop - unless that was placed on mine by SP2 Beta or RC1.

SP2 went pretty smoothly here, but my reason for posting is more of suprise that Billybob has XP and did an RC update? Billyboy, aren't you my Windows98 user? At my office I still tell people that there are heavy windows 98 users, and they have that thing as stable and fast as any Win XP.

I am worried how this SP2 will implement in the office setting. It seems to be created mainly for Home, even the Professional version. I dont want all 150 users in the office getting a Welcome screen asking them about firewalls and anti-virus. There should be options (and maybe there will be) to turn those off.

Yes, that is possible. Read more here: Using the Windows Firewall INF File in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 in a Managed Environment: Controlling Communication with the Internet.

I'm sure more information will be available in a "Deployment" document that always accompanies SP rollouts.

    File a bug

Thanks, PeteC, for pointing out the "File a bug" icon on my desktop. Mine is pretty messy, I admit. I found the link and filled out the report. I better spend some time organizing my desktop tonight so I can tell when icons are added, huh?

Yes, I am a Win98 ( 98SE that is ) User. I still have it on two machine. Yes it is just as stable as XP. :( And my Wife would be handing me my head on a platter if I messed with her machine. :(

I have XP on here mostly because I wanted to see what it was like. And I needed something NEW to fight with.

And also something else and something other users should start thinking about.

MANY software and hardware venders are following Microsoft. And most new soft and hardware is being designed. I DESPISE that fact but it is true. SE software & hardware may work with XP. But the other way around ??????

I also thank Arie for the info on the Firewall. That is one area that I do need to check into.

The only problem I had was that the Windows files that I moved were in their original position, ie My Documents, Favorites, and Address Book. A minor adjustment to get them to read in their moved locations.

    RayH-
I heard that, too, that default paths were restored and partitions messed up. Thanks for the heads up.

I am really starting to like SP2 albeit RC2. Love the new pop-up stopper (presently turned off Google's pop-up stopper for testing)...so far it's been a win win here...no issues at all.

Arie...thanks for the links...we were talking at work about how we are going to migrate our XP users (luckily we don't have too many) over to SP2.

The one problem I have discovered is that my Address Book that I moved to F:\Address Book\Ray.wab is not now recognized as Main Identity Address Book. It is now SHARED CONTACTS of Main Identity.

It may have gotten discombiated a couple of weeks ago when I tried SP2 the first time.

The two other folder, Favorites and My Documents were fixed by restoring them to original location and then putting them in my new location.

This has not worked for the Address Book. OE doesn't recognize any path for the Address Book, so it is using shared.

    RayH,

when I did the original installation of XP, I moved My documents, Favorites, Address book and E-mail storage location from the default locations on C: to custom folders on D:. AFTER that I installed SP1 with no ill effects (my moved folders stayed where they were put).

Do You recommend to temporarily move them back to the default location PRIOR to installing SP2?

    Thanks,
    Christer

Christer Relocating those folders back to their default location prior to an upgrade certainly couldn't hurt. But upgrades have a mind of their own anyway.

My issue with the Address Book may not be as much a problem as maybe I don't know what I've doing, which would not be unusual.

But with regards to my first SP2 upgrade that I kept in my computer for a day before ghosting out of it, it recreated My Documents, Favorites, and Address Book to the default locations.

The desktop My Documents and everything else was still linked to my moved location. IE still linked Favorites to my moved location. I don't think I ever checked the address book. But I was sending e-mail w/no problems.

There became an interesting link EVEN AFTER I ghosted back. The "new" folder in the default location still existed. The problem it was creating with My Documents was that in certain SAVE AS, it would want to start by going to Ray's Documents at C:\Documents and Settings\Ray...

I put the relocated (F:\) My Documents back into the default location and then moved them back to F:\. End of issue.

This upgrade, the My Documents did not apprear on C:\, but Favorites (blank) did. I just deleted the Favorites.

    Okey,
    thanks RayH!

I plan to create a fresh Image of the SP1a installation before installing SP2 on top. I'll leave the folders in their custom location and if everything is well after installing SP2, then I'm happy.

If all is not well ...... ...... in go the GBDs!
