I would greatly appreciate some advice. System is Win ME running with 512 RAM. System is extremely sluggish and frequently freezes, requiring cold boot to escape. When booted in Safe Mode, Process Explorer shows system idle process at 98%; when booted in normal mode, system idle process is only 40%: with MSGSRV32.exe running at 57%.

The only successful way of booting is to untick 'Load Static VxDs' in msconfig. Computer frequently aborts with 'Out of Memory' message, but when close down freezes.

Testing with 'you name it I've tried it' shows no uninvited guests. Hijack clean. Would try to Repair-Install Windows, but the only disk available is a Dell Recovery Disk.

Believe me I need help here...

How many programs do have running at startup (msconfig > Startup tab)? What are they? Many unnecessary programs can be disabled from running at startup through their Options menu.
