Went to the WinUpdate today. Checking for latest updates took 17 Min. to find that I do not have SP2 installed. Took 10 Min. more to find a High Priority update. Another 3 min to download and install 447K on a DSL setup. Seems like 30 Min. for the whole thing. Does anyone else have this same problem. I know Internet Explorer is much slower than Opera, but this is ridiculous. Or is this my computer.

wahlroot--Just went to Windows Update site. Everything OK.
Perhaps your ISP's server? Sometimes WU has too much traffic. Try again later.
Is the WU site the only slow site? Is it still slow now?

Hey Welshjim! My ISP is MicrosoftNetwork, also known as MSN. The Update site is the only one I see as this slow on Internet Explorer. Usually only use IE for the Update site. Otherwise, Opera. Maybe I am a little spoiled. Went back to the Update site and this time SP2 update came up in 9 Min. I had downloaded the High Priority updates so no use going there. This happened about 8:00 PM CST. Seems that should be a busy time. Guess the only way to stop the search for SP2 is to install it. I have the CD but I am not sure I am ready for that yet.

    Simple things to try.....

When in doubt about access to any web site you can try the following to see where the problem may lie:

Open a DOS window thru Start - Run and enter "cmd" (without quotes) in the run window and hit the enter key.

Once you have a DOS window open you can run one of two commands......

    ping

or tracert (short for trace route)

    so

    ping update.microsoft.com

    or

    tracert update.microsoft.com

will give you information as to IP address of host as it will resolve the name to an IP. In this case it will resolve update.microsoft.com to 64.4.21.189 and then tell you how fast or how slow you are getting there or at least tell you if any packets are being dropped which might indicate other problems most ISP related but some may be PC related - not to blame everything in your ISP.

Tracert will not only show you speeds of access but every router between you and the host (called HOPS) that your packets have to travel. Now some may not show up as not ALL routers have ICMP turned on...they prefer to remain hidden but most will tell you their IP address and name and location so you can see the "route" your data is taking to get there.

    :)

Hey Katmann! Did the ping and got:
    ping statistics for 207.46.156.25:
    packets sent = 4 received = 0 lost = 4 (100% lost)
    tracert:
tracing route to update.microsoft.com.nsate.net (64.4.21.1890) over a maximum of 30 hops.
    Request timed out 30 times.
    trace complete.
Do not know what any of that means. Do not see packets dropped, speeds or routers under tracert. Just what is shown under both ping and tracert.
