Why duplicate directories?

I seem to have two duplicate directories. The first dectory is Desktop\My Computer\___'s Documents\, and the second is Desktop\My Documents\. When I place a file in one, the same file description appears in the second. Neither is a shortcut. Both are the same size. Why are there duplicate directories containing the same file? All it accomplishes is to fill my HD, especially the photos. Thank you.

 

It's that way by design. They both have the same target as you will see under Properties. MS was trying to make it easier to access your personal documents. You do not have duplicate copies since the target folder is the same for both icons and duplicate files won't be tolerated by the system unless in different locations.

The Desktop icon for My Documents will point to the documents for whom ever is logged on at the time so it's dynamic by nature. It's actually a shortcut (check what it says in Properties) albeit a special one.
