You can run at boot any executable (exe), batch, dll, com, cmd etc etc by placing it or a shortcut to it in Start Menu\Programs\Startup. You can also run any file by placing it or a shortcut to it in the Startup folder provided the file has an existing association with a registered (in registry) program. This folder is the default startup location for the MSOffice Toolbar.

A much more robust (and free) application for seing what loads at boot (and from where) is Autoruns from www.sysinternals.com. It shows stuff that loads at boot that those other apps do not show, e.g. ALL windows processes and apps and shows registry keys and that those apps do not show..

For me I need change that to change that to " You should be able to." I can't.

One reason why my machine behaves as it does is because things may be the way they were in 98SE and just carried right over.

Yup ! I just checked my 98SE machine and it is the same. And before you ask I will answer. This HD is a COPY of the one on the 98SE machine. And it ran on here for some time before XP Pro was put overtop.

I believe goddez1 nailed it down tight when she mentioned the fact that I may have made changes.

I myself do all I can to keep everything not needed OUT of Startup. Through trial and error ( more of the latter ) I have found that certain things or a certain combination ( there is that word Combination again ) loading at start up actually may do nothing other than sss-l-o-w things down.

The amount of RAM needs to be considered. Maybe even the CPU may have a say so in the matter.

I also found out just in the past day or two that something loading at startup was causing hangups while on the Internet. Just what it was I am not sure because I shut down/removed several things. Some of them I did not even know were loading till I looked. And I was not happy to see them either.

If I start having hangups or other problems the FIRST PLACE I look is to see what Windows ( or some software ) has snuck back into the startup group.

    Hi BB,

If I start having hangups or other problems the FIRST PLACE I look is to see what Windows ( or some software ) has snuck back into the startup group.

The program that Tony mentioned - autoruns - has as one of it's many virtues the PERMANENT removal of startup items, no sneaking back in.

    Regards - Charles

Well folks things seem to be a bit different now.

I dropped a shortcut to KeyFinder.exe, Everest.exe and Autorun.exe ( not all at once though ). They did all load at startup.

They also showed up in the Startup folder.

Maybe I was prevously putting them into the wrong folder. I used PowerDesk and dropped them into the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Or maybe When I tried a shortcut to something like PrintShop I did not wait long enough for it to actually load.

Autorun only shows 2 more items than Startup Cop.

    [path]\Userinit
    and
[path]\Winlogon\Shell Which appears to be Windows Explorer.

Other than that all else is the same. And was adjusted according to which one of the items I listed earlier was loaded.

Well then, ahem...you keep on experimenting Billy Bob and refer back to my original post here. I think you'll find that the method I outlined works well and prevents folks from dropping things into the wrong folder since the GUI menu that I directed you to will represent the correct Startup folder for the logged on individual. I don't think you have ever tried that method. You may surprise yourself, give it a shot. With such simplicity there is always beauty. You won't even have to know the path to the Startup folder or use any Explorer or substitute Explorer. It's all Windows GUI and friendly as can be.

BB - Use the VIEW menu in autoruns to:
    1. Show all locations
    2. Show services
    3. or Only show MS entries

1 & 2 can both be checked at same time.
