In win 98 I had via the Start/run facility access to ASD (auto skip driver) and SFC (system file checker).

Am I still able to access and utilise these two programs in XP and if so....How so???? as they don't run out of Start/Run anymore.

    Thanks

    Try sfc/scannow for SFC.

SFC is still there, and ASD functionality is more or less build into the Device Manager ( from a device choose the Driver tab and Roll Back Driver).

    'Try sfc/scannow for SFC'.........this one's a NO GO...Windows cannot find.

    ASD.

Thanks, but isn't that a bit primitive and a long way round...is there any reasonable expanation for overiding the previous configuration of using the Start/Run facility!!!!!

Still a no go for SFC is my setup missing something?

Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced tab. Click the button Environment Variables. What is listed for the Path variable under System variables?

    Mine reads: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32\WBEM;G:\PROGRA~1\

    Assuming your path is proper,

Needs to have a space between the sfc and the /scannow.

It will run from start~run but I like it better from a cmd window since it gives more information about what is happening.

WOW....ignore all that hogwas it seems I have a keyboard malfunction...in spite of the fact that i have removed and reinstalled it.

Yup, it won't work properly like that!

    Newt
Yup, I run mine from a command Window (Start > Run > CMD), and I don't need to put a space... I thought too, but I tried it without a space, and it worked...

Thankyou for your input...wherever do you get the information from?

Fortunately!!! for me I do not read the instructions or I would never get to run the program being the slow reader that I am.

And of course...WHY????? such big changes.
How does one know whether to put a space or not??
    What does cmd stand for????
How do the innocent or naieve find the correct process......OK, its probably in the HELP files somewhere.

    Anyway...THANKS
