I am interested in using a backup from a web based system for my desktop XP. I have about 2 GB according to a sample I used from I Drive. Seemed like alot more than I need but thats what it said. Do they use more than the amount of actual backup?

I would like some suggestions for the most simple easy to use system. Also, if I use one for my desktop, can it be used to restore to a laptop with the same files? Is there an easier program than I Drive?

Hi rondom, I can not give you any advice as such, but I can pass on to you that I have read just the other day that one of the web based back up places went bust and users lost their data stored.
    I stick with Acronis

I agree whole heartedly with hawk22 - I would never trust my data to a third party. Think of the security risk for a start.

Acronis and an external drive is a far better solution IMO.

I've always been lax in my backup but have used a CD for some of files when backing up from Onecare. If I go to an external drive and Acronis for my desktop, can that be set up to backup automatically, like weekly etc? I also have a laptop which doesn't really also need backing up but can I restore from the external backup to my laptop?

Acronis has a built in scheduler, but bear in mind that the backup will only occur if the external drive is plugged in and switched on :)

I have Acronis backup (image) my OS drive automatically to a second internal hard drive which I then backup semi-automatically to an external drive weekly. By semi-automatically I mean that I have a group backup of several partitions controlled by Synchback which I initiate manually.

It is important to distinguish between a backup of personal data files and imaging the OS drive. The former is simply a copy of the files on other media - CD, DVD or external drive. The latter is a restorable image of your hard drive which includes the operating system - a bootable restore CD is made so that in the event of a disaster - fouled up OS or a dead hard drive - the computer can be booted from the recovery CD and the image restored to the drive to restore the computer to the state it was in when the image was made.

If all you want to do is keep a current backup of your data then SynchbackSE is all you need. I use SynchbackSE to backup my data partition hourly to another hard drive, several other partitions to another internal drive (I have 3 installed) on a weekly basis and then use the Group backup facility noted above to back all that lot up to an external drive. At any given time I have 3 very similar copies of my important data.

I wrote a simple batch file to pop up a window reminding me to switch on my external drive and used Task Scheduler to run the batch file four hours before the weekly backup task runs.
