Every time I switch on my computer, the following sequence of events happens:

    1) error message as soon as desktop background appears - " 'Avsynmgr' (which I understand is an anti-virus software synchronisation application) has caused an error in WDMGKL.DLL and will now close "

    2) error message as soon as taskbar appears - " 'Explorer has caused an error in WDMGKL.DLL and will now close "

So I can't get to Windows (I use ME), and I don't know what this particular .DLL file is or where it has come from/what is wrong with it - it's not a Microsoft one, according to their website. Do I definitely have a virus? If so, which and how can I get rid of it?Any thoughts?

    Cheers,

    Tom Carlton

    Welcome to the board, Tom.

I can find no mention (anywhere!) of that particular file.

Suggest that, as a starting point, you run this online scan and also download and run Adaware.

Since you cannot get to windows, you may need a dos based AV scan, there is a link down below where you can get one.

    Cheers guys

Fixed problem yesterday using startup disk to get to DOS and deleting the .DLL file - seeing as it didn't seem to be critical or useful for anything, that seemed the best solution!

All fine now. But thanks for the suggestions.

Good to hear that you got it running. I would be curious as to where it came from, as that filename is not of a M$ file. It did seem to pop out of nowhere. There is a free online AV scan just below.
