i got hit by some thing yesterday while downloading a codex needed for a movie that someone sent me. almost immediately i started having some problems. i restored my system back to a privious date and then all of a sudden it said i needed to reactivate my xp license. i used the phone variable with microsoft and was given a new code to enter and that worked and was able to get back in my machine. this morning when i turned the machine back on it again asked to reactivate. fortunately i wrote down the key and reenter and it allowed me back in.

so my question is there anything in the registry i can do to make sure i am not prompted everyday or do i need to rebuild my machine from scratch ???

Did you by any chance create a new non admin profile yesterday? If not, I'd start scanning for bad stuff asap.

nope did not create anything and the user groups still reflects just me and guest. guest with no access.

first thing i did was scan my system for bug. i use zonealarm security suite no bugs found. spybot did find some spywares and they have been treated. system is clean as a new born baby.

Sounds similar to the problems I had, have you been using any external storage - ie a USB hard disk?

only attach my external h.d. when i back up my data other than that its not attach continually. i know it was this **** codex that caused the problem and there must have been a bug in the file. not a big deal either i leave machine on all the time or never forget the new key microsoft gave me but there must be a registry entry somewhere that i can change to make permanent. hate rebuilding this machine usually take a whole weekend to complete. lots of stuff.
