    [Active] w32.vitro.....cleaned?

    hi.

i was recently attacked by the w32.vitro virus. My own fault for downloading a file but my antivirus missed it - AVG 8.5.
After searching the net on my laptop i found that many other users had found this virus nad that it was particularly nasty.
Anyway - after 2 formats, numerous virus scans using Avast, Dr Web and malware removal tools from Microsoft and Symantec, my new antivirus (avast) no longer finds anything on my machine other than a few zip files it says it can't scan due to password protection and a ISO file i made up of a photoslide show. Avast calls the ISO file a decompression bomb (it's a touch over 4gb) and from what i can gather is fairly normal.
But Dr web now finds no trace of Vitro, neither does Avast. But I've read forum posts of the virus re-appearing even 2 weeks later.

My question is, now that no scanner i run can find it (they previously found several hundred) does it mean I'm safe?
Is the virus likely to return from an existing file somewhere on my machine??

    many thanks
    Dave

If you formatted hard drive, you shouldn't have any reason to worry.

    thanks Broni

i should have more clear in my original post.
I formatted my c drive twice but i have several other drives (some internal, others are external) and they were all infected aswell....but have not been formatted. I want to keep the info on them.

The scanners do not find anything on the external drives. I left them connected once they were infected so i could include them in any scan or cleaning action.

Is this virus likely to reappear despite no virus scanner finding it? I believe this virus can change itself so i don't know if that makes it harder to remove or if the scanners find it regardless of what form it takes.

    am i in the clear?

    thanks
    Dave

In my opinion, you should be OK.
