    Howdy folks...

I am horsing around with an older (498mHz Celeron) Compaq machine, pretty old, 8GB but with 128mb RAM. I've installed Windows 2000 Pro on this machine. But every time I boot up, it gets to the first splash screen (annoucing that it's W2kPro, built on WinNT technology, with the horizontal progress bar on the bottom), but then it suddenly reboots. It'll do this over and over unless I intercede and just shut it down.

Any suggestions here? HD problem, BIOS/mobo problem?

    TIA

Did it ever boot up after the install?

Have you tried a new install with a format of the drive?

Also a check for a boot sector virus couldn't hurt.

    Howdy.

Nothing seems to be working. I was able to install W2kP and do the reboot at the end of it and then install apps. When I tried to reboot again, the machine began its shutdown. But the last screen, the one that tells me that it's now ok to shutdown, the screen resolution was like you see when you are in safe mode. Since then, this repeated reboot problem has been happening.

I have now tried to reinstall W2kP and a new problem has cropped up. During the install, before I get to formatting/re-formatting the partitions, I get an error message. The error message says something about the correct WinNT or W98 install disc couldn't be found and the install will now abort! Very strange.

I swapped out harddrives and still I can't install W2kP. The problem now is that it cannot find multiple files to copy to the hd during installation. I mean, like dozens and dozens of files. Eventually, the install freezes and I have to start over.

    Weird, huh?

What speed is your CD? I ran into install problems like that a few years ago with NT4 (trying and failing to load the new OS) and it turned out a faster CD was needed. Not sure at this point but I vaguely remember having 2X and needing at least 4X or something.

    That's a good question. I think it's 24x, but I'm certain it's more than 4x.

I have a couple of 56x CD-ROM drives sitting around; so I'll just pop one in and see what happens.

    Thanks....

I was having problems w/ win2K also. Had the same problem w/ multiple files missing. I have a disk eraser utility that completly erases the HDD. I did that and did a new install and it worked. The utility is a free download called KILLDISK at killdisk.com.
This installation has been a bit more stable, but still having some
problems. I have a Palm m515 and when I 'hot sync' the files transfer but as soon as it's done the computer 'dumps' the physical memory to disk and reboots. Then it hangs on the win2k screen like you mentioned above and I have to unplug my printer port cable to get it to restart. I loaded updated printer drivers and Palm drivers but have not yet resolved the problem.
