W2K very slow!

Have a 750 MHZ ABIT KT7A. Upon installing w2k, it seems horribly slow compared to w98. Sometimes it seems as if it has frozen but eventually "wakes up."

Thanks for any tips! Already am going to try the "no sound" solutation I discovered here, thanks!

 

How much ram do you have?
Do a ctrl - alt - del and choose task manager. Choose the performance tab and post the numbers.

A couple things I can think of.

As mentioned b4, RAM, I have found W2k doesn't run really well until at least 128MB.

NTFS is a little slower than FAT32 if you are running it.

Turn off indexing if you haven't - its a hog

Make sure your HDD is running in DMA if ATA.

Make sure your AV is not running constantly

 

system specs

go poke around there. They specialize in this mobo. (I have one)
There are few things that can cause that problem on that motherboard. The board aint slow. My 98se system on an 650duron smokes for a 650 duron.

Wow thanks all you guys for the help....sound card still doesn't work, but am researching that (PCI soundblaster live, got the 2000 drivers), maybe I need to update BIOS?? That scares me!!! It's an ABIT KT7A, got it last year...

Oh I have 128 mb ram, don't think it's indexing and don't know how to check if AV is running all the time, help???

If your running an AMD did you install the patches for W2K? & If you have a Via chipset the lates drivers.

 

I forgot all that on IRQ 11 is normal. W2K handles it different.

 

The info you gave us is fine but at the very bottom of that window is summerises CPU usage and memory usage. Can you post those numbers please?
