Well I'm on my way to recover another laptop, but it's having a cow about everything fatal OE errors at 0028:0005257 VXD Vmm(01), and a few other memory addresses.

Is it possible a bad sims? I'm showing 128mgs of ram, which is correct, but there are times when booting up in the safe mode, the bootup fails due to bas xml, but it's not consistent. Is there a way to test the sims? I've done the memory in dos.

I found this page about the VMM32.vxd file at vhttp://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html and he shows how to rebuild it after backups are made.

My question is, I've got quite a list, for sure, do all the vxd's come from the windows software and not the other applications installed. Just wondered what would happen if the vxd isn't in the 98 cd...

I've got the 2 files preparred but will do it tomorrow when I'm not so tired. If any of you all out there have had something similar, I'd appreciate your input. I've gotten the IE6 updated from MS on the web and need to update the windows files and so far the system shuts down just about over anything. Thanks Cyn

Pete, well there wasn't enough info for me I guess:( , the article implies all you need to do is copy the file to a cd.....that doesn't work.

So do I make the cd bootable with the startup files and add the image that the ms memory software creates? And next, should it stay an windiag.iso or should be converted to a bin?

Or should the windiag.iso be coppied to the floppy with the other startup files and create the boot cd with the memory test that way.

There is so much I don't understand about boot file requirements, I used to think the boot sector was a physical format difference than rest of the hard drive---like the difference in the old record players, duh, Cyn

    Cyn,

Are we still with the laptop sans floppy or is this another? Post back and I'll sort the best option for your situation. I used the floppy option.

Yup, no floppy. The directions imply just copy the cd image (iso) file to a cd and run the test from there. It didn't work--so I figured I should make my own floppy image, boy, cd reator didn't like that file and refused to image it.

But REALLY, while in Windows, can a person run mem from a dos screen and be accurate enough? I don't think simmtester is any better than the others. Anyway, wouldn't I have to take the simms in to a repair place to really validate the hardware? Cyn

Now back to the error, the advance registry optimizer seemed to make it worse, what about this technique? Yeah, I know, but it's from your sister site, Pete. http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html.

What worries me is every vxd file from the windows cd? (I've got a bit of a list here) And if you follow this technique, what would happen if the file is not there to extract? Hey I'm game to try it, I've had the files ready for a couple of days.

I'm thinking if I could stay stable enough to update windows from Microsoft that might be a fix, but I keep having the VMM901) error that prevents me from doing it. Cyn

    Cyn,

I'm afraid I have to back out of this for a while - out most of today/evening and away Friday for a few days - sorry :(

Maybe time to 'bite the bullet' and start over? Reformat and reinstall. Just no time today to go back over the threads and think this thing through logically.
