the volume control on my win xp machine has conked off all of a sudden. i muted the **** thing last night. today i see the following error message when i try to access Volume Control from 'Accessories':

'There are no active devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers, and Other Hardware, then click Add Hardware. This program will now close.'

i followed the instructions. Add new hardware, however, has no option for adding a new 'mixer device.' it says the drivers work fine.

    help.

    volume ctrl solved.

I followed a similar thread posted by Ann. I quote:

Download sndvol32.exe from here. You can download it to your desktop and give it a try, if it works move it to your *\system32 folder:
    http://www.relaxingsoftware.com/updatedfiles.htm

It is an exact copy down to the version and size of my own sndvol32.exe. I have downloaded it and it works fine on my computer. I realize this is sort of workaround maybe doing you a disservice in the long run as the expand method if done carefully and correctly with attention being paid to proper syntax and spaces and making sure you have and are in the cdrom's i386 folder(directory), and your system32 folder is usig the path you typed, the expansion of this file should have been accomplished.... but any landing is a good landing and downloading the sndvol32.exe is a workaround that may be less painful.

    ---Strictly for F.Y.I---
As for msconfig: (again this maybe a bit of a nuisance if not done correctly):
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH and it does ask for a restart after the expansion.

    ---------
As a side note and being cautious have you virus scanned? Sndvol32.exe is known to be the target of many a trojan virus. Just wondering how you managed to lose it in the first place.
